Letting a cigar sit for ~10 minutes

Maybe 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes as long as half-hour. Again, I've been smoking cigars for 4 years or so, but haven't done tons of research or reading about them. That's one of the reasons why I joined here. Let me give you another "for-instance": I light up when I get home from work, but my family comes home sooner than I thought they would. I'm half-way through the cigar and my wife says dinner is ready. It is NOT in my best interest to stay outside until I'm done smoking. It may stay sitting for up to 45 minutes. Again, what's my play?

That's one of the reasons I've come to love the smaller format vitolas. They're a quicker smoke and they're more affordable in most instances too, so I end up smoking better blends. But, to your question, I wouldn't worry too much about 45 minutes. Purge before you set it down, purge before you light it back up, it's all you can do.

The term that this is called is "purge". It can also freshen up flavors in a lit stick when you are well in to it or help with a cigar that you smoked too fast and is over heated. I sometimes use it when the wrapper isn't burning right just to get it to even out.

There are people on this board who think nothing of picking up a day old cigar from an ashtray on the patio and lighting up. There are those who say that once it is out, it is out. The purge is a very useful technique, so experiment with it. Also, you can clip the ash end a little bit to get rid of the cold ash that you might inhale when lighting.

I relight cigars all the time when working in the yard. Have no idea if its been 10 minutes or 30 minutes since it went out. Never had a problem.

This. I purge before setting it down and again when relighting. When I relight I use one simple test to see if I continue smoking it: how does it taste? That's really all that matters.

I've found that some cigars can sit for an hour or two and smoke fine when re-lit. There are others that I know if it's going to be more than 5-10 minutes I'll toss it out.
