Letting a cigar sit for ~10 minutes
 

Sometimes, due to having to go pick up one of my kids unexpectedly etc., I have to let my half-smoked stick sit. I've heard you can blow through it to get some smoke out of it so it won't get stale. Now, I'm not a psychics professor or anything, but it sure seems like just taking a puff in reverse. What's my play here?

Smoke sits within the cigar when you pull on it. Blowing through the cigar removes any sort of smoke that's lingering inside the cigar. No stale smoke, no foul.

Doesn't always work though.

After re-reading .. twice, how long are you letting them sit for? It's not going to go stale THAT fast. Nothing wrong with expelling the smoke, I've done it now and then while smoking as the stick gets, it's all personal preference.

Maybe 10 to 15 minutes, sometimes as long as half-hour. Again, I've been smoking cigars for 4 years or so, but haven't done tons of research or reading about them. That's one of the reasons why I joined here. Let me give you another "for-instance": I light up when I get home from work, but my family comes home sooner than I thought they would. I'm half-way through the cigar and my wife says dinner is ready. It is NOT in my best interest to stay outside until I'm done smoking. It may stay sitting for up to 45 minutes. Again, what's my play?

Get a divorce so you can stay outside, enjoy your cigars and eat when you are damn well ready :r

No, I have let them sit for a couple of hours after a blow and it works most of the time.

That's one of the reasons I've come to love the smaller format vitolas. They're a quicker smoke and they're more affordable in most instances too, so I end up smoking better blends. But, to your question, I wouldn't worry too much about 45 minutes. Purge before you set it down, purge before you light it back up, it's all you can do.

The term that this is called is "purge". It can also freshen up flavors in a lit stick when you are well in to it or help with a cigar that you smoked too fast and is over heated. I sometimes use it when the wrapper isn't burning right just to get it to even out.

There are people on this board who think nothing of picking up a day old cigar from an ashtray on the patio and lighting up. There are those who say that once it is out, it is out. The purge is a very useful technique, so experiment with it. Also, you can clip the ash end a little bit to get rid of the cold ash that you might inhale when lighting.

I relight cigars all the time when working in the yard. Have no idea if its been 10 minutes or 30 minutes since it went out. Never had a problem.

This. I purge before setting it down and again when relighting. When I relight I use one simple test to see if I continue smoking it: how does it taste? That's really all that matters.

I've found that some cigars can sit for an hour or two and smoke fine when re-lit. There are others that I know if it's going to be more than 5-10 minutes I'll toss it out.

If you are going to do this, I have found a great way to indicate when the cigar is purged. I put a soft flame (I guess a torch might also work, but I use a soft flame) to the lit end of the cigar and blow through it. A cool blue flame is produced. Blow until there is no blue flame coming out the end of your cigar - it is effectively "purged". Then set it down.

I sometimes do this if a cigar become slightly bitter or acrid, sometimes even if I am not enjoying it as I was earlier in my smoke. A purge can be very helpful at times.
