What's roasting home roasters?
Just finished one of my favorite blends.
Roaster: Behmor 1600 Beans: Sweet Marias Liquid Amber Espresso. This is a "pungent and potent blend", that I love to roast into second crack, almost Vienna. Longer than I normally roast, and going into a rolling second crack, I never leave the roaster as things heat up quickly and a fire risk is always present. I roast this one on profile C on my behmor and the roast is a long one at 22 minutes, with first crack starting around 15 minutes into roast, second crack starting around 21 minutes and by 22 minutes, I am in cooldown with a rolling second crack and plenty of pungent smoke. Once finished, after a 2-3 day rest, this blend really shines and hits it's peak around 5-8 days after roast. Of all the blends I have roasted, Liquid Amber Espresso blend really suits my latte drinks perfectly. It really has a smooth spiciness that leaves a long aftertaste. On a scale from 1-10, this one is a solid 8.

Whatever. Keep trying to resist. You'll be roasting before Spring.

Just ordered this device yesterday. Battery operated and sucks the air out of the beans for storage. http://www.beanvac.com/ I like toys so yeah, I can see a roaster in the future and I can also see me wearing it as my wife throws it on my head.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Seattle Coffee Gear has it but I ordered it from my local Bed, Bath and Beyond.
It is available only on their website but I ordered from the store in person as my wife has those 20% coupons that can only be used there. Ended up being $38 with shipping and all. Sells for $39 everywhere, including eBay. Check this out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wntIi1doigs

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Bed, Bath and Beyond online only had 40 of them on Monday night.
Paid for it in the store to use the 20% coupon.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
I've bean on a longish (6-months) roasting layoff - first roasting break in 10 years. It is time to regroove and fire that muthuh up this week. I've been meandering through the commercially available realm for a while and, much to my surprise, it still really sucks by comparison. I figured it woulda gotten better by now. Ho hum.
Someone inspire me.

I'm sipping on some of the Liquid Amber I roasted a couple days ago and, once again, it's really shining after a couple days rest.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Some Sumatran and a Costa Rican Hard bean blend for me, the Sumatra fairly dark, and the CR fairly light. Good enough to keep me alive for another day or few.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Did a bit of Sumatran and Kona last week. Loving them both. The Sumatran is more earthy and dark and heavy. The Kona has a beautiful light flavor to it. Seems like hints of tea in it. I think the Kona I did may be the best batch I've done yet.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Where to begin, LOL. Now that I can roast a kilo at a time I have been ordering from coffee shrub and roasting 10-20lbs a week. I am throwing bags of coffee at strangers walking down the street. If your foot even touches my driveway you have to take home a pound of beans. Heck I even grind it for them, .
Really enjoying Ethiopian Jimma Niguise as an SO espresso, but when roasted with a quicker finish it is excellent drip as well. just received some costa rica yellow honey that is still resting. I roasted up some of this years Panama Gesha that turned out very nice as one of the first light roasts on the new roaster. |

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
With the cooler weather and roasting outside, I have been having a hard time getting full roasts accomplished.
One of the limitations, and there are many, of the Behmor, is you can only add 2 additional minutes onto the preset roast profiles and that isn't allowing second crack to be reached without adjustments. Some adjustments I have found to work are smaller roast sizes, different roasting times, etc. Any tips would be appreciated.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
Cardboard box with fiberglass insulation (aluminized finish facing in) glued on top, sides and back faces? That oughta keep the heat closer to home for about $3.00. A correcty sized box would probably do the trick alone (it does with a popper); the glass would only protect the cardboard from being overheated.
The last bag, a pound of normally reliable Mayorga yirg from jrcigars, was SOOOOOOOOO bad Mrs. Moo and I almost cound't drink it. I gotta get organizized.

Re: What's roasting home roasters?
If it is too cold I roast inside under the Stove vent. It works just fine. The only draw back I have is that I cant smoke cigars in the house.

My house doesn't vent outside from the stove, just recirculates the air through a filter so the smoke alarms would go off. Supposed to warm up in Florida by the weekend though, which is great news as these 30 degree nights suck.
