Default Cat Crystals

I read somewhere, I think here on CA. Could not find the thread but someone was building a new humi or kooler. They posted on their thread that they where going to use Cat Crystals. Can they be used in the humidor to control R/H. Is this true??? If so, how do they work & how can they be used? Any info would be great...

Cat Crystals/Kitty Liter absorbs moisture. It does not regulate RH.
And since you are in a dry climate (southern California), there is no excess humidity to absorb.

Protect your investment. Go with beads.

No.

Not properly at least. Scott shilala did pretty extensive testing with them I believe. Check maybe threads he's posted. Might have been at the previous place though

I've tried both.

I tested the stuff across two different manufacturer's coolers and three humidors, one of which was an Avallo 1200, in all cases, KL was, at best, very erratic in it's maintaining of an rh level and required a rather large volume of the stuff to even come close to mimicking the performance of what you can get from a few oz of HCM or Heartfelt beads.

Yes, it's cheap, but you get what you pay for, and my cigars are worth more to me than to trust their storage to something designed to suck up cat piss and clump a pile of catshit for easy removal.

I guess I could try to save $20 on beads, but to protect large monetary investment in my cigars, I'll spend the $20.

I am sure this will turn into another fiasco thread, though.

I tried them when I first got my Vino and didnt want to spend a lot on the humidification device, they did work... sortof, however I would not trust them long term. I finally bit the bullet and got some heartfelt beads and have never had a problem with them, they have been in use for over 4 years and they are still as reliable as day one.

Yeah Rico, better off just leaving the Kitty Litter for the cats. No point in downgrading to an inferior method when something like Shilala's Beads are so readily available and prevalent.
