Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban Edicion Limitada
Years ago I used to smoke Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban (GPECC) religiously due to the price and taste. I've always wondered about the Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban Edicion Limitada (GPECC-EL) since their release so on a whim, I ordered a box. I've read on forums where people won't try these cigars due to the name but I've seen some current releases today with some serious silly names and I'm sure they are quite tasty. Blame the name on Lew Rothman of JR Cigars. I believe Perdomo makes these but not sure.
The cigar: Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban Edicion Limitada Size: 5.62 X 44 Wrapper: Nicaragua Binder: Ecuador Sumatra Filler: Honduras/Nicaragua Shape: Corona Extra. Price: $58 for box of 25 Pre-Light: The cigar is very firm with little give. The foot has a barnyard smell and nothing out the ordinary. It's not the prettiest cigar you'll ever see but it is a $2 smoke. Draw is perfect. 1st Third: Earthy flavors off the bat. Good amount of smoke but the burn is not very straight (I must be doing something wrong). Later in the first third, I start to get cedar undertones coming in. Not a very complex cigar by all means. 2nd Third: I'm getting little hints of espresso which I welcome but it dies down fairly quickly (bummer). Cedar is still there but a little harsh in the aftertaste. Last Third: Pretty much the same as the 2nd third. Cedar taste still in the front. I was really hoping the espresso hints would come back to visit but I think this cigar has played all it's cards. Conclusion: I smoked a GPECC-EL a few days ago and it tasted better than the one I just reviewed so I'm going to hope that this was a dud. I still prefer the GPECC for my "yard 'gars". Will I order another box? I don't think so. I have enough "yard 'gars" to last me awhile, plus I need to stock up on my CCs |

I tried one of these once...did not care for it at all...there are many cigars out there that are a far better value, IMO...

Thanks for the review! Sounds good but I agree there are better budget sticks out there ( I had a Gran Habano Vintage 2002 the other day that was great for $2).

Nice review on a cheap 'gar that most people even refuse to give a chance! It's great to see a review of a yard-gar now and then, just to keep things real for those of us that can't always smoke $8 sticks! (Nothing wrong with $8 sticks, just always good to have a back-up for quick, possible throw away sticks!)

So its got a awful name and a real counterfeit Cuban prolly has better taste.
Nice review though maybe do another in 6 months - a year and see what they are like then. One can only hope. |

Like the review! I smoked a few of the old ones a while back. I don't remember it being overly impressive, but it wasn't bad either. This edition seems pretty solid.

Re: Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban Edicion Limitada
I stopped falling for Lew's BS for decades, and then he got me back in with his JR Alternative to the Behike 54.
I was thinking, "Hey, if his other alternatives are $hi+, and THIS is an alternative to the most expensive cigar made, then MAYBE it's pretty good....Lew sure says it's excellent. Well of course that's Lew Rothman who you can't trust for $hit when it comes to BS. There are few better at it. He got me. I ordered 1 pack, thank goodness I couldn't get any more, because they were a freaking tire fire. Just absolutely awful. http://olscigars.blogspot.com/2010/1...ternative.html Last edited by OLS; 03-26-2012 at 01:42 PM. |

I can say that these (GPECC and GPECC-EL) are much better than the JR Alts (IMHO). |

Re: Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfeit Cuban Edicion Limitada
The Corona Genuine Counterfeits were one of my first box purchases about 8 years ago, and I think I still have some of them in one of my humidors. Unfortunately, almost everyone of those cigars I tried to smoke were plugged so tight that I ended up pitching most of them because it wasn't worth the effort.
