Default Video Techy help needed

I have a video I recorded from my home surveillance system onto a DVD.
How do I now take that DVD and make it into a file that I can either email to friends or upload to You Tube as an example?
I have a MacBook and have tried iMovie, QuickTime Player and DVD Player and can't seem to figure out how to import the video.
I also have Toast Titanium but haven't tried that yet.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

There should be two main files if it's in DVD format.

TS_Video
TS_Audio

There are programs out there that will combine both into one big file then extract it from the DVD and compress it...It falls under the same idea as ripping a DVD to your hard drive. I don't have a mac and haven't ripped a DVD in a while but just google it..You'll find something. I'll check back here for updates

I use a program called Handbrake. Dunno if there's a Mac version though.

Also, in Linux, I use a program called Thoggen DVD Ripper.

I don't use a mac, but you can try Handbrake if that doesn't work.
http://handbrake.fr/details.php

I believe it is pretty much what you are looking for.
Will take a DVD source and extract it to a .mp4 (Quicktime)

iMovie limits where you can import from.
You can either do it from the camera, or three other choices, none of which is reads from a DVD in the drive.

Man I am inept for this stuff.

I downloaded handbrake but it tells me I need the 64 bit vlc. The website says the 64 is not available but you can use the 32. The program doesn't acknowledge the 32 and tells me I need the 64.

Found a PC World recommended download trial version for free and pulled it off.
If I need it again, will drop the $49 but not for now.
Thanks to all.

did you burn the DVD off of the CCTV DVR or did you transfer it using the video out?

I burned it directly from the surveillance unit onto a DVD burner and then had it finalized to use with any player. Pretty much works now just like any DVD on any player or computer. The recorder is a Sony unit that formats and finalizes.

alright.

i ask as most CCTV DVR's burn in a secured format that takes their software to view.

but since you burned it to an external DVR, I will be of no use to you.
