Default Neck stiffness

Woke up yesterday with an absolutely killer pain in my neck that lingered all day, and by the time I got home from work it was like someone had screwed a bolt in my spine at the base of my neck which prevented my from looking up or turning side to side. Anyone have an experience like this? It just seems to be getting worse and I get shooting pains whenever I try to turn it. I'm only 24 but right now I feel like an 85 year old man with some hardcore arthritic issues.

Guy with a neck ache walks into a doctors office, says "Doc, it hurts when I do THIS''.
The doctor told him "Well don't DO THAT."

My dad had the same thing, it was thyroid cancer.

In your case, you should be fine in a day or so. Everything from sleeping wrong to sleeping
too near the AC duct through too much soda or too much salt can cause that. It can also
be caused by mandibular muscle issues, TMJ. It comes and goes, and while it can seem stubborn
to get rid of it, sometimes the best thing to do is reverse it...if it hurts like hell to sleep with it
a certain way, then DO THAT, at least til you fall asleep.
Like the doctor said...don't DO that.

My girlfriend said this type of extreme stiffness was a primary symptom of meningitis but I never developed the fever that goes along with it. Needless to say I got really freaked out last night reading about it.

Is it possible you hyper extended your neck? Its easy to do. I did it when I was younger just turning my neck to fast to check the clock.

Symptoms

There are a number of symptoms that indicate hyperextension of the neck. The first of these is neck pain. This pain is generally felt along either side of the spine at the back of the neck, although there is also pain whenever the neck is moved. It is also common for there to be a stiff neck, headache, muscle spasms, tenderness along the back of the neck, and sometimes a tingling or numbness in the upper body or shooting pain from the neck into the shoulder and down the arm.
Diagnosis

Hyperextension of the neck is usually diagnosed via a physical examination of the neck and a medical history, including details of the accident that caused the injury. X-rays may be taken if fracture is suspected. It is best to seek medical attention immediately after an accident if there is any concern of possible neck injury.
Treatment

If paramedics think an injury to the neck is possible, then a neck brace is applied and the patient transported to the hospital. Hyperextension of the neck will heal over time and it is necessary to do range of motion exercises to ensure the healing goes well. In addition, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NSAIDs, can be taken to reduce the pain and swelling associated with the injury. If the pain is severe, then narcotic medication can be used and muscle relaxing medications can be used if muscle spasms occur. Other helpful treatments include cool compresses and physical therapy.

Best to call your Doctor and ask them for advice, especially if it doesn't improve.

It's possible, the only thing I can remember that might have caused that was sneezing pretty hard in succession the night before it started. As dumb as that sounds...

not dumb at all. If it forced your neck to move beyond its normal range of motion.

I had a similar problem. Ended up being a couple of bulging disks in my c-spine.

I do get a shooting pain going down my neck and under my armpit when I try to look up. So this hyper extension thing does sound possible.

This. I've got a herniated disc at c5-c6 that causes all kinds of similar symptoms, including pain down my right shoulder/upper arm.

If the pain doesn't subside after a couple days, go see your doctor. They can take x-rays to see what might be going on and if need be, send you for a MRI.

This often happens when you smoke inexpensive cigars. Smoke better cigars.

PT can be very beneficial for this. I had bulging discs in C5 and C6 and it helped a lot.

Had an appt, and the doctor said I more than likely hyper extended my neck so he prescribed me some muscle relaxants. They really make a difference, thanks for the help and suggestions you guys gave me. Hopefully this sorts itself out shortly.
