Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
I haven't used the MagicJack but I have been using Vonage for the last 6 months or so and I have been pleased. This works on the same principle (VOIP).

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
My best friend's sister is in Paris doing a study abroad program and though he hasn't really told me the specifics, he says her MagicJack works perfectly for her.
His recommendation means a lot to me for this product, as he's the uber-geeky type and would quickly trash talk a crappy techy product. Sorry I couldn't speak to any specifics, but consider this a thumbs up from me. |

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
My Dad has been using one for a couple months, and he seems to like it a lot. It must be easy to setup and use as well, because he's not a techy person and he's had no trouble with it.

Haven't used it, but it must be a profitable company - aren't they sponsoring a CFB bowl game this year? Gotta sell a lot of magic jacks for that kind of dough.

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
I installed ours yesterday and have no problems thus far. It's installed on my wife's desktop PC for convenience since we move the laptops around far more frequently. I had it installed on my laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, initially then uninstalled and installed it on her desktop running Windows XP Professional. Both installs worked flawlessly as did the uninstall.
To uninstall you must download and run mjRemover.exe from here http://upgrades.talk4free.com/tools/mjRemover.exe for Windows or for Mac download and run http://upgrades.magicjack.com/tools/...teUninstall.sh. Both of us have cell phones from different providers (T-mobile and Verizon), so if the ISP (TWC) is down we can still communicate. So we're still noobs with it and opinion is subject to change. FWIW, I got one because one of my close friends; who left GSA to work for DOD, took his to Kuwait with him and I've had 3-4 phone conversations with him and experienced no problems. Lastly, I will NOT miss the monthly bill from AT&T... |

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
I get nervous with these things because if there is a power outage, you lose your phone. I like the old school phone for that safety net.
That being said, I don't have an old school phone either. However, if I was going to get a house phone, I'd have one that I could still make calls in an emergency with if the power did go out.

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
I remember seeing something about this on the news (their Deal or Dud segment).
Basically at the time, you got one year of service with the product and after that had to pay yearly. It's been a while, so I don't really remember and I don't know if it is still the same. The people that were unhappy felt deceived because they thought it would be free for the life of the product. Other than that, they were happy with the product. |

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
I use both MagicJack and Vonage for my business in Switzerland. MagicJack has excellent sound quality, but takes a little to initialize and needs a computer to connect to. Vonage is a stand-alone device.
MagicJack seems to be a better value, but for faxing or permanent solution, Vonage is more robust.

Re: Anyone use the MagicJack?
There is still no voice product available that is as reliable as a twisted copper pair. No power outages, no modem, no computer to have to leave on all the time and no issues with E911. It's Verizon (or your local carrier of choice) for me.
