According to Zap2It, it was an unaired season 1 ep. And Abrams said Fringe would be less confusing than Lost...

It would have helped us had they mentioned that at the beginning or something!

The whole time we're like, what is this? Some alternate universe / time jump?!

TBH, it should have been pretty easy for the viewers to realize it was just an unaired episode from when Charlei was still alive...I watch it...it's great...twilight zone and x-files all wrapped up in one...
