I was lucky enough to catch Roger Waters on the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking tour with Eric Clapton on lead guitar. The name David Gilmore never entered our minds.
It was Roger's first solo project and took all the weirdness from Final Cut and expanded on it. I sat in the 4th row of Radio City Music Hall and nobody moved from there seat for 2 hours, which would normally be a bad thing, but we were all too tripped out. Kinda ironic that the reuinion seems to be Gilmore's decision when he never would have been in the band if Sid Barret didn't reach for the secret too soon and cry for the moon. Roger wanted full control of the music, which might not have been a bad thing, in my mind, based on what the band did after he left.
