Any bass players?
Is anyone here a bass player?
I'm looking to get a bass, I've played guitar for a lot of years and want to branch out. I'm looking for a decent starter, however I do not want a Fender or Fender style bass. Can anyone help with recommendations? |

Bass player here.
I sold guitars, basses and other musical instruments for about 5 years, I should be able to point you in the right direction. Ibanez makes some really, really nice entry level basses. What styles do you like D?

Re: Any bass players?
I've been playing since high school, about 17 years now.
I agree with Ibanez on the low cost, good quality beginner basses. Nice ergonomics. Yamaha also has some good ones. If your local music store has them, also check out Peavey. They are underrated in my book. I play a Steinberger 4-string, a Fender 4 string Jazz, and a custom Carvin 6 string.

Re: Any bass players?
I like the solid body bass, I really like most of the stuff Schecter makes and I am a big EMG electronics advocate. I don't like how Fenders look with the white pick guard on everything.

The Ibanez GSR200 is my right of the bat recommendation, I sold 100's of these: http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ass?sku=519524 ESP's LTD series is also a nice choice on the entry level. Very aggressive styling. http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ass?sku=512723 I certainly agree with TenrCS on the Yamaha basses. I like the Ibanez at the $200 price point a little better but I like Yamaha a little better in the mid-range. Here is the low end Yamaha though: http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend....ass?sku=511081 I don't remember you giving a price range so let me know if I am in the ballpark. Also I would really recommend taking a trip down to your local music store and getting your hands on some basses - especially if you have a good independent local store.

I have played pass for the past 10 years.
I have accumulated quite a few. My 3 favorites are 1. Gibson Thunderbird IV Studio 2. Ibanez BTB 6 string 3. Peavy Fury 4

Re: Any bass players?
I am a big fan of the gibson style short scale basses. I picked up a 76 kaye SG body style bass from craigslist a couple of years ago for $100 that is just a deep rumbling machine. It's a lot of fun, plays fast, and is great for power trio rock.

Re: Any bass players?
I've got a schecter stilletto custom-4 that plays beautifully. I love the tone and the feel of it. You should be able to find one at your local guitar center, the best thing to do is to just go and play a bunch of them to see which one feels right. Also, keep in mind the amp will make a difference in the tone, so you'll have to figure out what amp you want too.

Re: Any bass players?
Alright, so here is the bass I got. It's a Schecter Diamond Series "Damien". It retails for $499. I got it off eBay for $200 used. I guess it has a few blemishes on the body (big deal), but plays great.
Here are the specs: # Bolt-on # 34" # Basswood # Maple/Rosewood # 24-Jumbo # Black Pearl Bats inlay # EMG HZ # Vol,Blend,Active 2-band EQ w/ selectable freq. # Diamond Custom Bridge # Satin Black finish |
