Fight my Brute!

I hit level 4 and got Cry of the Damned. It is supposed to get rid of opponents pets however does it automatically activate like the knife or do you have to make your brute use it?

It will automatically do what ever it is going to do in a fight.

Isn't that the truth! I have a knife and the stick and my guy doesn't pull his weapons until it's too late and I'm dead.
