One time I watch it and I think its a put on like someone else mentioned, Andy Kaufman.
Then I watch parts of it again and think he's whacked out or just tired of Letterman being a wise ass all the time.. I'm leaning toward it being an act. The sunglasses help hide the tattletale expression in the eyes.
