Question about Gone With the Wind song?

In the scene where Ashley Wilkes, Rhett Butler, and Dr. Meade come into Mellie's from their night at the shanty-town, drunk, what song are they singing? The only line I can catch is "All the darkies am a-singing..."

Great film, in my opinion. Looks wonderful in HD, and makes me sorry I didn't watch the DVD at all when I bought it. Thankfully, I found the desire to buy the collector's set at a great price, and sat down to enjoy it. They don't make 'em like this any more...pity.

On second viewing, it may be "Swanee River."

Thats actually called "old folks at home" isn't it? by Stephen Foster. I live not too far from the Suwannee River and Stephen Foster never even saw it.

I actually just checked it, and it doesn't appear in the lyrics, but who knows?

I've got a feeling Foster didn't see a lot of what he wrote. I read once, however, that he was found dead in Pittsburgh, PA with a few cents in his pocket and handwritten lyrics to "Hard Times Come Again No More." Now that's tragic bordering on maudlin lol

Ashley and Rhett are singing “My Old Kentucky Home” Stephen Foster 1852. Although most of the song is garbled, they sing this line as Rhett sets Ashley in the chair: “wherever the darkies may go.” Of course, the lyrics have changed since then.

The Kentucky Derby still uses "My Old Kentucky Home" as their official song of the race. But for thirty plus years now, only the first verse is played and sung.

It's not easy to even look up the other verses online, they've been semi erased from history.
