I too learned the hard way that once a stick reaches a certain point that it is much safer to relight away from my face.

Ouch!

The other way to get burned - in the good ol' cigarette smoking days, I always cupped my hand around my Bic to light my smokes. 20 years later and it's still a habit. All I have now are torches. Cup your hand around one of those and things heat up quickly. I warn someone at least monthly about cupping their hands when I hand them my lighter.

Ha! My brother in law did this with my torch lighter a few weeks ago
