Swiss, sautéed mushrooms and onions. That or mayo, ketchup, mustard, onions, tomato and lettuce.
Lisa and I have been trying lots of different "gourmet burgers" when we're out. Last night we rode the motorcycles to Whitey's near Brecksville, OH. She got the mushroom burger, I got a bleu cheese baco-burger. It reinforced to me that I don't like bleu cheese on a hamburger, as much as I want to. Odd, cause I love bleu cheese. I don't like bacon on my hamburger, either. Also odd.

I popped in to say there wasn't enough bacon in this thread. And then I read your post about last night's burger--which is actually my favorite way to have a hamburger. Blue cheese + bacon.

I'm also partial to a fried egg (just the egg, not on the bluecheese/bacon burger.) But that goes back to my drunken college days, so it's a reminiscent taste for me.

Yeah, but Greg, bread DOES let the condiments drip THROUGH, lol.

He's right, don't get me started. I never say in ten words what I can say in 1000.
It was mostly just a setup for my joke about racing through the produce section to
get to the FOOD....that's a joke.

Bacon, cheese, ketchup and mustard. There is no need for anything else.

If you have quality meat, then you really don't need much more on the burger.

One of my favorite toppings on a burger is Pimento Cheese, especially Palmetto Pimento Cheese

I also like Bacon

And third but definitely not least I like a cheese burger with chili and slaw on top, bonus if you put Pimento cheese instead of sliced cheese and double bonus if you add bacon

And no harm if you add mayo as well

I will say I've had a sunny side up egg on a burger at Three Floyds. It was really good. But their burger is brilliance to begin with. I see they have sweet breads on the menu now, a trip is in store soon.

I like runny egg on a burger too. There is a place in Decatur GA called Farm Burger that has bacon, sunny side up egg, pepper jack cheese, and salsa verde that is outstanding. But I agree with your statement that all burgers need to start with good meat.

There is also a place in Decatur ga called eddie's attic which has some great musical acts. John Mayer played a lot of shows there on his way up. Cool place to check out, if you're in the area.

Sorry to go off topic...

I have spent a few nights at Eddie's Attic but its been years. Great place. Decatur also has The Brick Store Pub which is one of the best beer bars I've ever been to

Yeah Burger in the Highlands and Midtown is good too. The wife and I have to hold ourselves back from going to Farm Burger too often. There is supposed to be another location opening up in Buckhead. It will probably be closer to us so there will be even more of a temptation.

As far as toppings, I used to load up on all kinds of stuff and have the messiest burgers. I guess in my old age I don't want to deal with the mess so I keep it simple. Lettuce, tomato, cheese and a little mayo. If you have a good burger, you shouldn't need many toppings.

Favorite burger in my area is the "The Old Fashioned House Burger" (from their website) grilled over a live fire and topped with fried onions, Bavaria's hickory-smoked bacon, aged Cheddar, garlic sauce and a soft-cooked egg on a buttered and toasted roll. You can also add Braunschweiger to it. I know BigVito loved it.
