It's the sensor up near the earpiece that turns off the screen when you are talking on the phone. I have read this a huge problem, mine does it too. When it doesn't work right you are dialing numbers with your face. Hoping 4.2 makes it better.

Nah, I can't afford to be on the blueface replacement plan.

It's still a great phone, but while it's the "best" iphone yet, it also has more of those little annoying problem than my others combined.

I've had some issues with the proximity sensor as well in the past.
I haven't pressed any buttons by accident in a while, though. Maybe I've learned to hold it against my face better.
