That was the main character's wife and son?? I figured it was the family of the buddy. That would be very strange.

It was absolutely his wife and kid. In the scene immediately after the woman is kissing the guy in the tent, it cuts to the patrol car the main character is driving and he pulls down the visor to show a photo of him with his wife & kid.
