Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
The coolest it gets in our house is 75 degrees, downstairs where I keep my humidor. It's usually around 80 up in the bedroom although it doesn't really feel that warm. I'd like to keep my humidor upstairs on my desk.
I know 75 is still a little warm for preventing cigar beetles, so, will it make a difference whether I keep it downstairs or upstairs? Once it get's past 70 degrees, does the gradual increase in temperature indicate a gradual increase of beetle infestation? Not serious enough to buy a wine cooler so right now I'll take my chances. |

My temp. fluctuates between 70 and 80 also, and I have never had a problem. I freeze everything when it comes in. Also I do watch my humidity and it maintains 64-66%.

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
I might need to look into freezing. I was too lazy to read the long thread on it.
Doesn't seem like too bad of a process. Just curious of the risks to damaging the cigars. Seems like a pretty thorough process. Last edited by Sonic04GT; 10-08-2011 at 02:04 PM. |

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
It's pretty simple. Fridge for 12 hours, freeze for 48 hours, fridge for 12, room temp for 4-6 hours, place in humidor. That's what I do in my fridge/freezer. The first entry in that thread gives you the temp/duration ratios. Put them in a ziplock freezer bag and push out as much air as possible.
It seems like a lot of work, but after seeing the damage they can do, I'll do the work every time. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
I haven't had any damage and most say it doesn't affect the flavor. I think the biggest risk is wrapper splits, but if you do the fridge/freezer/fridge/room temp, it should minimize it. I've had wrapper issues with and without the freezing so I believe it's nil.

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
Thanks, I might give that a try. I'm somewhat impatient but I'm not sure I want to risk trying it with all 32 of my cigars at once. I know that's not many but to me it is haha
Maybe throw a couple in and see what happens. That essentially turns it into a 6 day process though. Last edited by Sonic04GT; 10-08-2011 at 02:17 PM. |

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
I recently decided to go through and freeze my entire stash (300+ sticks) and I did not have one cigar come out with a split wrapper. I went straight to the freezer for 72 hours, then 24 in the fridge, then a couple hours to get to room temp then back in the cooler. I've since avoided the fridge altogether, just going straight into the freezer, then out on the counter until it gets to room temperature. Still no problems. I triple bag them in ziplocks before putting them in.
It's really not much additional effort for peace of mind. I'd strongly suggest it if your temps are getting up around 80. |

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
What help drop the temp for me was my walk in closet that has an A/C vent in it. I did two things, one was to keep the door closed at all times which dropped the temp from 77 to 73/74 degrees for my two humidors. The other thing I did was to elevate my long Pelican gun case that was turned into a Pelicoor and I was able to place it on an upper shelf that allows the A/C vent to blow right on it. My Pelicoor runs right about a consent 71/72 degrees.

Re: Any difference between 75 and 80 degrees?
Hmmm... What about putting your 50 ct humi inside a cooler? I suppose if you really needed to cool it down, you could occasionally throw a sealed ice pack in there wrapped in a small towel for a few hours/overnight or something to keep temps down.
My den/man cave stays around 65 degrees year round in northern MN, so I've never had to worry about the heat issue.
