Kicking around a possible book idea
I may have access to a national park that was founded in the 40’s. If I can gain full access to the park, and am thinking of documenting all the old homes and church’s that still exist on the park. I am not a writer, but have one in the family that is willing to write it all up for me. What do you all think?

sounds like a good coffee table book if there are LOTS of pictures.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
That's my plan lots and lots of pictures. I am also going to do it old school in B&W film, so I can blow it up enough to be a little grainy.
I am also in the process of getting access to a darkroom, so I can do all the developing and prints myself. |

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Sounds like a cool topic. I wish you the best of luck getting it published. I wrote a book about a Civil War surgeon and because its such a small niche its very hard to sell copies. I had two big name military publishers interested in mine but had to pass due to the economy and probability that it would not be a big seller. Your best bet is to self publish and market yourself.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Search for publishers that have released similar books. Sell the idea to them and see if they are willing to publish it. If a book is going to sell a publisher will pick it up. Publishing it yourself will be expensive and may not be profitable, it rarely is.
I have seen links related to national parks that have books for sale. They are all from regular publishers. Seek out some national park websites and see if you can find any book links. Note the publishers and check them out. Good luck, follow your dream, and shop that book around. Three words of wisdom, outline, outline, outline. With a highly detailed outline the book will almost "write itself". Best of luck.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
I have a meeting with one of the guys with the park to get approval on it. I am crossing my fingers on this one.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
I am in the process now of getting my film cameras. I just recently sold off all of my canon gear to replace it with Nikon anyway. I really wanted a Nikon F4 because I coveted them when I was in college, but went with the F100 instead. I just wish someone hadn't stole all my gear while I was in school. I may also pick up a F5 as well so I have a backup. Now I really have to rethink the lenses. I had intended to just order an 18-200, but they only work on the digital cameras.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Well I got shot down. Because the homes are on a section of the park that is not accesible to the public they wouldn't sign off on it. He said he could sneak me in, but I couldn't publish any of them.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Sorry to hear it. Is it a safety concern or what is the official reason for not allowing access?

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
The portion of the park that the houses are on is restricted to park employees only. In this park you are required to stay on the public trails.

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Got it! If this is something you dream of doing I would not let this stop me, sounds like you need to go up a level or two to get the answer you want.
Many times people are afraid to make decisions that carry this kind of potentially public responsability. Again, push it up the ladder respectfully, you may be surprised! |

Re: Kicking around a possible book idea
Definitely go the next level up. The local park employees may not have the authority to grant you access but the regional office or even the national headquarters could.
