Re: Does the wrapper really impart 60% of the flavor?
Yes, maybe. I don't know about 60%... might be 59.95 on sale. But the difference is statistically significant, I believe. The 1495 Connoisseur pack is a great way to experiment. None of them are better than the EcSu that the 1495 normally has, but they're all good.

Not sure about the percentage, but if you've smoked a DPG JJ and a DPG JJ Maduro you'll know there's a huge difference.

ive only had a few of these situations...one that i learned alot from tho was the Rocky Patel vintage 1992 and 1990...the 92 has an Ecuadorean Sumatra wrapper and the 90 has a maduro wrapper on it...very different tasting. both are two of my favorite old smokes tho! :)

Re: Does the wrapper really impart 60% of the flavor?
While I believe the wrapper can affect the taste of a cigar dramatically, I only believe it does this in certain cases.
The 1495 Connoisseur series was a great idea. I have smoked through a couple of them now. There is a huge difference in some of the blends, mainly the brazil vs the conn. But that again is very specific. I mean you are taking a filler blend and changing to a whole new wrapper of different origin, composition, etc. Ratio of filler to RG (a robusto vs a corona) the change can be noticeable, but then again that's a pretty major change. Where as in a box of the same cigars, the difference in color or slight variation of a wrapper tends to be negligible. |

Re: Does the wrapper really impart 60% of the flavor?
You don't have to go out and buy anything, or even the same two cigars with different wrappers. If you want to know what a difference a wrapper makes, or even what different wrappers taste like (Cameroon vs Nicaraguan Corojo vs Conn Broadleaf etc) take your favorite cigar, a few of them. Take wrappers off other cigars and put them on this cigar that you know backwards and forwards. You will see that it makes a world of difference. Try a Tat Red wrapper on a VSG cigar, pretty tasty! The Cameroon wrapper on a AF Anejo not so good.
I don't know why but the top wrappers provides most of the taste, it doesn't really make sense to me but its true. Take a wrapper off a cigar, say a wrapper of a above mentioned cigar Pepin JJ. Start smoking a cheaper cigar like a H Upmann Maduro. About halfway though the smoke put the JJ wrapper straight over the maduro wrapper. You won't believe the difference and the fact that the maduro flavor disappears but its still on the cigar. I know all this sounds nuts but it can be fun and you are learning about cigars. I have done a many in the past including making a culebra out of 3 Oliva V lanceros. Three Oliva V Lanceros http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u..._tuff/0452.jpg The 3 wrappers that came off http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...uff/0492-1.jpg Putting new wrappers back on, one is a maduro, one double habano, one a habano and conn barber poll http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u..._tuff/0502.jpg The three cigars wrapped back up http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...uff/0512-1.jpg And the final culebra http://i643.photobucket.com/albums/u...uff/0533-1.jpg |
Re: Does the wrapper really impart 60% of the flavor?
You can always try a shaggy foot cigar just to see how much flavor can be in a wrapper. The first few draws will be only filler. Once the burn reaches the wrapper leaf you get a totally differnt experience.
