Default Apparently Deer Can Read...

This clip is recording of a call to a radio show; the following is a transcript of the clip. If this is real and not a radio-show prank then am at a loss for words...

[Y94 Playhouse]
...Now, Donna, you got quite the vent today. It sounds like what’s going on with you?

[Donna The Deer Lady]
Well, I wanted to voice my opinion on something that’s been bothering me for a really long time.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Okay.

[Donna]
I’ve tried writing to newspaper and contacting TV stations, but nobody seems to want to stay with this, so I’m calling you guys.

[Y94 Playhouse]
What’s the issue?

[Donna]
Over the past few years, I’ve been involved in three separate car accidents involving deer, you know with the population and everything. Each of these incidents they’ve occurred shortly after I saw a deer crossing sign on the highway. Well, my frustration is that Minnesota and North Dakota Department of Transportation would allow these deer crossings to be in such high traffic areas. I mean, I didn’t see them on the Interstate. Why are we encouraging deer to cross at the Interstate, I don’t get it, it’s such a high traffic area. I mean…

[Y94 Playhouse]
Are you kidding???

[Donna]
I mean, I understand that they are all animals. They need to travel across the streets occasionally to survive and of course just to find food, but it seems to me that so irresponsible of us to allow these deer crossings to be in areas where these deer are so likely to be struck by oncoming traffic. Won’t you agree?

[Y94 Playhouse]
Ah…

[Donna]
I mean it’s just, I mean, you think that they would put deer crossings maybe, you know, in smaller towns, maybe doing it like at a school crossing. That’s what – it will be a safer place for them to cross, you know, for the deer crossing sign.

[Y94 Playhouse]
You know deer crossings aren’t telling deer that it’s safe to cross there; it’s just more of like an alert for drivers so they know it’s like a high deer population.

[Donna]
The government put the deer crossings there, they can direct the deer population anywhere they want to by moving that deer crossing sign. I mean, you know, why the world would they place it on the highway or the Interstate, I mean, oh, my God. There are so many other places I can think of than putting the deer crossing signs on busy highways or Interstate.

[Y94 Playhouse]
You seem to under the misunderstanding that the deer are somehow attracted to the deer crossing sign.

[Donna]
Well, ya, the deer crossing sign is there to allow the deer to know that’s where they need to cross.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Right. And all of these car accidents you had involved the deer after you’d saw a deer crossing sign?

[Donna]
Exactly. I mean, I’m trying to watch out for the deer, but I mean, you know, speed limit is 55, 65, how am I supposed to, you know, you can’t brake really quick, you know, if deer is crossing in that deer crossing area.

[Y94 Playhouse - Woman]
So you would like to say these signs move somewhere safer?

[Donna]
Right. If we could move them like don’t put deer crossing signs on the Interstate or Freeways, you know, put them in lower traffic areas, you know somewhere where the speed limit a lot slower.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Ah, ah.

[Donna]
You know, maybe small towns, I don’t know. I think school crossing is a good idea.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Well, listen, we will, yeah, I mean you say you’ve tried to contact quite a few people about this.

[Donna]
Right. Yeah, I wrote like at least three or four letters and…

[Y94 Playhouse]
We will spread the word. Okay. We’ll try to kind of help you raise some awareness for this issue. Okay.

[Donna]
Ah, thank you. We need to move those deer crossing signs.

[Y94 Playhouse]
We appreciate your comment this morning.

[Donna]
All right. Thank you.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Bye.

[Y94 Playhouse]
Ha ha ha…

I agree that deer crossings should either be put in a safer location or crossing guards provided (possums?)

Also, why point out that slow children are playing in a specific neighborhood? It's the fast ones that you have to watch out for.

Another variation in this letter to the editor:

Move the deer crossing to where there's less traffic

A lot of deer get hit by cars west of Crown Point on U.S. 231. There are too many cars to have the deer crossing here. The deer crossing sign needs to be moved to a road with less traffic.

I heard the call to the radio station via youtube - don't know if it is real or not, but I wouldn't doubt it.

What scares me is that people like that are given driver's licenses, asked to hold down jobs, get to vote, etc...

Scary stuff.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

As someone formerly in the industry, most of these bits are actually pre-recorded or at the very least planned out well in advance. Spontaneous radio gold so rarely happens in such an awesome fashion. Prepburger and other companies are notorious for putting things like this together to "move the needle", so to speak.
