Thoughts on MLB.tv?
I am considering canceling cable and getting MLB.tv on a Roku box.
Is anyone a subscriber? If so, can you offer any insight on the service? Likes? Dislikes? Etc? |

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
I looked into it last year to stream yankee games while I was at work.
I didn't get it because they will not stream your home market teams games. Making it useless to me.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
Exactly!!!
The fine print from their website Regular Season Local Live Blackout: All live games on MLB.TV and available through MLB.com At Bat are subject to local blackouts. Such live games will be blacked out in each applicable Club's home television territory, regardless of whether that Club is playing at home or away. If a game is blacked out in an area, it is not available for live game viewing. If you are an MLB.TV Premium subscriber and not within either Club's home television territory, the applicable game will be available as an archived game as soon as possible after the conclusion of the game. If you are an MLB.TV Premium subscriber within either Club's home television territory or an MLB.TV subscriber in any territory, the applicable game will be available as an archived game approximately 90 minutes after the conclusion of the game. Archived games are not available through MLB.com At Bat.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
I have had it for a couple of years. I have used it in Canada and on my front porch. I do not recall ever having a game blacked out. I really like the way they changed it last year when you have a choice of seeing the local (yes) broadcast or the mlb version. I don't think I could survive without it. The service people I talked to were very helpful and knowledgeable when I first got it. I was concerned about not being able to get games in Canada and sure enough there was no problem. Joe you may want to give them a call to discuss your concern. I have not had it for the entire season and the price goes down as the season progresses. You can get it for a month at a time.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
No blackouts on mlb audio. Radio broadcasts for both home and away teams, plus it's only around $20 for the whole year.

The service blacks out based on IP address locale not where you sign up. I thought about using my house in Florida's addy to register but once I log in from a NJ IP I wouldn't get Yankee games.

The package is for fans of the game.
If all someone is looking for is a way to get their home team, mlb.tv is not the answer.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
Exactly. The cable packages are the same way. I order the baseball pack through cablevision and the Yankees games are locked on there. Only Yes shows em, which is unfortunate considering all the bad programming on there.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
Since it is on ROKU, I decided to go ahead and get it for 2011. I did get it for a few months a couple of years ago, but sitting at my computer watching a game was not enjoyable. Many Cinci games are on TV here, so I know that those games will be blacked out. On the other hand, I will be able to watch the Reds when I travel- albeit on the computer.
So, I'll be able to better advise you after this season, but since you have ROKU, I'd give it a whirl.

Mean D, just to make sure, you need to click on the link on mlb.com as to what teams will be blacked out in your area. I live in NC and the Nationals and Orioles are the only teams blacked out in my area (why Atlanta isn't blacked out is beyond me). But I assume if you are near SF, then they would be blacked out.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
So, this would likely be no help in the absurd situation that I am in, where I am considered in the Boston area for blackouts, but I don't actually get NESN on my cable, so when they get exclusive license to the games, I won't see them?

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
you can put the zip code from where you'll be watching in here
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp#blackout and it will tell you what teams are blacked out in that market. I have the mlb radio app on my phone so I can listen to games (the radio feed isn't blacked out) and you can often listen to local announcers or the opposing team's announcers, which is fun. I've been wanting to cancel my cable service, and looked into mlb.tv via the Roku box (which I already have) but decided against it since my local team is blacked out.

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
Looks like no Spring Training games will be available on ROKU. And I'm reading that service last year was terrible. So, I'm gonna be very quick to cancel my subscription if I encounter any problems. The fact that no ST games are available has my trigger finger itching....

Re: Thoughts on MLB.tv?
I was about to sign up this year but saw this
Regular Season Weekend National Live Blackout: Due to MLB exclusivities, live games occurring each Saturday with a scheduled start time after 1:10 PM ET or before 7:05 PM ET and each Sunday with a scheduled start time after 5:00 PM ET, will be blacked out in the United States (including the territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands). In addition, in the event of extraordinary circumstances that produce a programming conflict, the above blackout windows may be subject to change. Live Audio of such games is available as part of any MLB.TV subscription Service, as part of the MLB.com Gameday Audio subscription Service and may be available as part of certain other of our subscription Services, including MLB.com At Bat. Can anyone chime in on this? Most of my enjoyment would be on the weekends in the shed with a cigar. If is blacked out basically the whole weekend this is a no go. |
