Well considering my lack of skill I blame everything on equipment

I think the 17-40 is where you want to be. There are a few other options like a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 which has gotten very good reviews or an old 17-35mm f/2.8L if you feel you really need 2.8, but my thinking is for what you shoot and the high ISO performance of the 5d, you don't really need f/2.8 and the IQ of the 17-40L is great.

I thought that would be the ticket I just needed someone else to tell me to pull the trigger.

One other question, What are your thoughts on the 70-200 F/4?

I've played with one, it's a great sharp lens for the money, if you don't need IS. In my opinion, it's really an outdoor lens. Not fast enough to give you great shutter speeds indoors. Also, for me, at those focal lengths, f/4 is not fast enough because I have shaky hands. Otherwise it's a fantastic lens.

For what I shoot, I need f/2.8 probably on both zoom ranges, and probably IS on the 70-200, which means expensive and I'll have to wait to buy. I like primes anyways, and I shoot crop for now. I've been tempted multiple times to pull the trigger on the 70-200 f/4, but I shoot a lot indoors and mostly people so IS by itself won't cut it, but nor will just 2.8 in most situations for me. It might work for you though based on what you said you like to shoot. Also, it's a more reasonable focal length on FF and the minimum focusing distances are surprising on all 4 Canon 70-200's.

Tomorrow should be interesting! Standard wedding gear is a couple 5D's and half a dozen lenses strapped on at all times, but I always said if I absolutely had to, I could do most of the wedding with just a 5D and a 24-105mm f4 L .... well, time to put my money where my mouth is! Good friend asked me to take some pics of their wedding tomorrow (really a 2yr confirmation of their marriage, but they married here in the states and her Venezuelan family never got a proper wedding). I couldn't risk bringing so much equipment with me to Venezuela.... so I get to do the ENTIRE wedding tomorrow with just the 5D, the 24-105mm, and a 580EX flash. Should be VERY interesting!!!!

So as a combined gift from the wife, the in-laws, and my mom, I got a Nikon D3000 with a 55-200mm lens for my birthday.

I'm really excited to step into the photog. world. I've never used a DSLR before, so I am trying to learn as much as I can.

I can't wait til I can get some nice pics like what I see here.

Wow... that was an interesting wedding, sprinkled with some near terror. Murphy was working overtime on this one!

absolutely fuking terrifying when 10 minutes before the ceremony I click the shutter, here a rattle inside the camera, and get a black picture..... pop the lens off and discover that the focal plane mirror that splits light between the viewfinder and the metering/focal sensors has completely come unglued, is rattling loose, and cracked.

Now let me take a second to remind you, I don't have my full kit with me. I don't even have a 1/4 of the kit with me. That's my only camera and lens, and I am up in the mountains, literally hours away from civilization.

Thanks to the grace of God, I had had, on a whim, thrown a tube of super glue in my backpack that morning..... and the ceremony was running a few minutes late. I glued the mirror back together (fortunately it wasn't cracked on the part that went to the focusing sensor!) and then glued it back into the camera. Right side of my viewfinder was realllllllly blury, but other than that I was back in business!!!!

Option 2 if that didn't work would have been to shoot it completely blind, on manual exposure. AF still worked fine, but without the darker mirror there, metering got thrown out of whack by about +3 stops too bright.

Interesting for sure because it was a Venezuelan wedding - similar to ours, but lots of distinct differences in terms of how things are organized and run. Rehearsal? more like a circus show. "let it happen" was the unspoken motto for the day. Cool thing was, it did all happen... and the heart that I saw there was some of the most I've ever seen in a wedding, very touching to see how everyone worked it.

flat out strange when dinner was served at, no joke, 12:45am .... these guys really like to party late!!!! Oh yeah, and I won't even talk about the "hora loca" later on... which was kind of like a mini mardis gras, and music that changed every 30 seconds until everyone was too damned tired to move anymore.

My first attempts at taking decent pictures. These are unedited, and straight off the SD card. They aren't the greatest by any means, but they are better than anything I have ever taken before.

Don't mind the dead grass in the last one, it's been dry as a bone for the last month here.

Took this on Sunday at the lake.

This is my first real attempt at any type of editing. It looks alright. I wish the power lines weren't in the way.

Here's the original.
