I'm right in Medford. Why research so much?
I will. I don't want to just get a dog and not have the right environment for them.

Re: Let's see pics of your pets. Post up pics
Most greyhounds are raised to race. That means that they spend most of their lives in crates being handled by humans and have never had time to just be a dog. They should never be off leash except in a fully fenced (6' height) area because if something catches their attention (like a car), they will chase it often to the point of exhaustion or even death. Bringing a retired racer in to a home can be difficult because they don't know about windows, sliding glass doors, stairs or furniture. They do know about turnout areas, so are very easily trained to let you know when they need to go outside. Some are high prey (not safe around cats, small dogs, or toddlers) and some are best friends with cats, squirrels, etc. And everything in between. Most agencies require a home visit and interview if you haven't had one before, since it is a different experience from what people consider normal dogs. But they are loyal and always happy and worship the people in their lives.

Wish they always were that small and cute. But like kids, they grow to be teenagers.

They used a picture of our newest greyhound, Tia, in the ad for an adoption event last weekend.

Zebo (the brindle) and Tia watching me eat a hamburger at the annual greyhound picnic this past weekend. Think that they want some?

Great picture of the hounds, I had a greyhound several years ago, she was a wonderful dog. Maybe someday I will have another!

This is Ralph.....he protects the great walled compound in the midst of the rough
streets of NW Memphis. I wouldn't have 5hi+ without Ralph, it would all be stolen long ago. Lately he is also a great squirrel dog. This is the first year we have had edible pecans in the yard due to my aggressive squirrel eradication plan put into effect over summer. 15 squirrels to the raptor center, and he picked up every one, gave it a brutal shake and delivered it to my waiting hand. And now he wil bark to let me know that there is a squirrel in the tree if I am in the BY doing something. A great, smart mutt of a dog. SO FAITHFUL....sits in the BY all day waiting for me to get home from work. HEELS to me everywhere I walk. I stop, he stops. I never taught him that and he never walks outside the fence like a dog that would know how to heel. He is in a veritable dog zoo exhibit. And yet he heels....hmm. |
