What is strange is that cigarette smoking is more directly linked to major illnesses such as bronchitis and lung cancer than cigars are. Yet, cigars take the brunt end of taxation. I've known a lot of cigar smokers in my circle of family and friends. NONE of them had died of a 'tobacco' related illness. I'm not burying my head in the sand but facts speak for themselves. But all tobacco deaths are lumped together. Painting with the wide brush, including cigars as one of the many evils, even though cigarettes are nothing but chemically infused tobacco paper.

I just bought a box of My Father LE 2010's in Nashville last week. The LOCAL tax was 1.00 per cigar. The total tax on the box was $29.00.

Looked up the details for Texas and for what we would likely call a cigar it is 1.1 cents each.

This is the direct link to the Texas cigar tax law (in HTML).

From a general tax perspective, there is no state income tax and the state sales tax is 6.25%. In Houston proper the local sales taxes add 2% more for 8.25% total.

For anyone interested here is a direct link to the SCHIP law (in PDF).

These outrageous taxes are just another way for the government to try controlling what, when, and with whom we do whatever we do. Sad... Very sad!!

I live in MO but my favorite B&M is in KS, luckily the tax rate is the same for both states.

This country loves to, for lack of a better term, abuse the smokers and tobacco users. When money needs to be raised one of the first taxes they raise is tobacco.

If you make a purchase online from a store in another state, which tax rate applies?

Technically you would owe the tax to the state you live in, and the online shop does not charge you their state tax. Somehow I bet a lot of folks accidentally "forget" to voluntarily submit those taxes to their own state.

You dont pay Tobacco tax. The tax due is Sales tax and that is calculated based upon the delivery address.
