I agree both are to blame. I just figure the owners will win as they have other sources of income. Most of the players do not.

Not sure of the financial status of the NHL, but it can't be good.

Players took a 24% paycut in 2005, now the owners want an even bigger paycut now...though league revenues are at an all-time high?

What would you tell your boss if he told you he was wanting you to give him a 25% paycut even though his profits were up?

Operating Income for the NHL as a whole has been on the decline since 08 or 09. Also, in the current CBA, salary is capped at 57% of revenue. Compare that too the NBA which is 50% or even the NFL which is 48. I think MLB is even less. Yeah, teams like the Maple Leafs are operating in massive profit, well massive for the NHL, but you also have big time losses sourcing from teams like the Lightening and Blue Jackets.. Of course, full disclosure to the NHL's financial position would be great. It's hard to understand why no one has agreed yet, but with such a tiny scope at the NHL and it's position, I'm more inclined to say both parties are dragging their feet and need to hash this out.. It's going to suck not having the Hawks/NHL to watch this year

I'll buy that the NHL's income is declining when they give their books full disclosure. If Columbus and Tampa are dragging down their bottom line, dump 'em. 4 divisions with 7 teams each. Perfect.

They should dump NJ and Dallas too! Both teams have massive amounts of debt.

This was the basic issue:

Quote:
The NHL, led by Commissioner Gary Bettman, attempted to convince players to accept a salary structure linking player salaries to league revenues, guaranteeing the clubs what the league called cost certainty. According to an NHL-commissioned report prepared by former U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Arthur Levitt, prior to 2004–05, NHL clubs spent about 76 percent of their gross revenues on players' salaries – a figure far higher than those in other North American sports – and collectively lost US$273 million during the 2002–03 season.

I think that all four majors would benefit from an elimination of some teams, the NHL primarily. Bettman has got to be one of the worst commissioners in any sport in history. Quite a legacy.

Quite the downer situation with the NHL, just when I thought that the NHL was make progress in the US another labour stoppage will kill and likely moved that progress backwards.

I can't really comment about the whole situation but I do hope that they get it resolved faster then what I think its going to take.

One thing that is for sure is that there is going to be some great hockey in the AHL this year. Some big name young players will be floating around, Skinner, Eberle, RNH just to name a few so if you have a chance make sure you check it out.

How are Skinner, Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins available to the AHL without clearing waivers, Matt?

It's because they are all on 3 year Entry Level Contracts and have played less then 160 games in the NHL.

The number of years exempt from waivers and the the number of games played are based on at what age they signed their first NHL contract.

No problem waivers are actually quite complex especially when you factor in re-entry waivers.

Full Story

Gary Bettman and the NHL are pretty serious about their gag order on any comments to the media from within NHL organizations.
