Build quality seems good enough, good field of view, mostly visible red dot (bright sunlight and snow like I have here gave it a bit of trouble, but you can still make out the dot, which is all one can expect for under $100.

But here's the problem - correct me if I'm wrong, and I may well be, the theory of a red dot is that, similar to a reflex sight, the dot moves around in the window relative to your head position, so it doesn't matter what angle you look through it, the dot is on target, right?

So I set it down on the table, aimed it at the wall 10ft away, and peered through. Eureka, a dot! and I moved my head to the side, Eureka, the dot moved with my head! But wait... the point of aim also moved with my head! Significantly! At only 10ft away, moving my head to the side could adjust the point of aim by approx. 4 inches in either direction!

This effect is generally minimized with a scope which has minimal eye relief, you can't actually see through it unless you're lined up pretty close to center. But with a wide red dot tube like that one, if the point of aim shifts, then how are you supposed to line your head up precisely down the middle to get an accurate shot if it has such a wide viewing angle?
Parallax. It will be much more noticeable on targets that are a short distance away. 50 yards seems to be the magic number as far as being parallax "free."

Yeh any rifle with a barrel less than 16" or shotgun with barrel under 18" is a sbr or sbs and I have to fill out forms and mail money to the ATF for a "tax stamp"

Oh? you can't just break out the hack-saw like the rest of us?

Maybe this is a dumb question... but in a world where a few mods can turn many rifles into 900rpm bump fire lead-storms, and most pistols have atleast the option for a high capacity magazine, what difference does it make how short a barrel is?

Well, that goes back to the history of the NFA, which was conveniently passed right at the end of prohibition, when all those agents were about to find themselves without a job. Never heard of a government agency ever getting SMALLER now have you? They had to come up with something for guys to do once all the horrible liquor was legal again.

So why the individual items?

Silencer - This was also during the great depression, people needed food, and they had a problem with poachers selling illegal meat.

Machine Guns - They needed extra charges to hold chicago gangsters on, and they were carrying tommy guns.

SBRs - not sure on this one, might be more of the machine gun logic.

So why $200? well, $200 seems like nothing to pay today, that's about the price of a new smartphone! But just imagine trying to pony up $200 back in 1934!

Justin,
I follow the form and the fee but it also requires a living trust to designate who would get it in the event of your death?

There are two routes you can take.

1. Have a revocable living trust that the NFA item will belong to. Also with the trust, only persons designated as Trustee can handle the NFA item. With the regular route like route 2, only the person who sent in the Form1/4 can handle it.
or
2. Get fingerprinted and then have the Sheriff or Police Chief sign off on your Form 1.

I'm going route 1 to avoid the hassle of route 2. The signature is really only supposed to be the CLEO saying that they know no reason why you would use the NFA item for illegal purposes. But most use it as a way to just be a dick and depending on the CLEO they may deny or approve however they like. You can also have a judge sign instead but unfortunately the only really gun friendly judge we had got voted out of office this time.

Some people pay big $ and set up a trust through a lawyer who knows NFA very well. Most use quicken willmaker plus 2009 to do it cuz it's cheap/free. Just make sure you get the 2009 or older edition as the 2010 and newer don't do trusts.
