June 12th 1839 Abner Doubleday created the game of baseball, according to the legend. However, evidence has surfaced that indicates that the game of baseball was played before 1800. 1880 Lee Richmond of the Worcester Ruby Legs pitched the first perfect game in major league history in a 1-0 victory over the Cleveland Blues. 1939 The Baseball Hall of Fame opened to the public in Cooperstown, New York. 1942 Anne Frank received a diary for her birthday. 1963 Civil rights leader Medgar Evers was fatally shot in front of his home in Jackson, Mississippi. 1978 David Berkowitz was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for each of the six "Son of Sam" .44-caliber killings that had terrified New Yorkers. 1994 Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were murdered outside her home in Los Angeles. O.J. Simpson was later acquitted of the killings, but he was held liable in a civil suit. 1997 Interleague play began in baseball, ending a 126-year tradition of separating the major leagues until the World Series. 2003 Actor Gregory Peck died at age 87. 2007 Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert died at 89 years old. 2009 All television broadcasts in the United States switch from analog to digital transmission.
