I eat gefilte fish once a year. Gotta have hot horseraddish with it. Once had some from an up-scale grocery. It was awful, and about $25 a pound.

My wife makes gefilte fish every year for passover and I can tell you that homemade is the only way to go. It's mostly Carp with a little Whitefish and sometimes Pike thrown in. Add a little purple horseradish and it's pretty good eating.

Help me out here.
Gelfite Fish is not a particular kind of fish but instead a way of curing or canning fish? The fish is put into a gelatin? What else is in the gelatin to keep it fresh? What does it taste like? |

And Gregg, yep, picture a Matzoh Ball but instead of being a bready ball that floats in soup, you've got a Matzoh Fish Ball. Think meatball, but made of fish and (not bread crumbs but) matzoh (giant square cracker) crumbs. The jelly, I guess, is just to preserve it...sometimes they throw carrots in there. Once the jelly sits out a bit, it kinda liquifies so it's not so gross lookin' (picture translucent puss). What's it taste like...hmmm...... No freakin' clue. I can't really say it tastes like anything else. Very slightly like fish, very slightly like a matzoh ball. Add in the horseradish & you've got yerself a delicacy. they are fish balls made from a mixture of different fishes. The bones of the fish are use to make a sauce. As the bones are gelatinous, when the sauce goes cold, it become jelly. So, you make a fish ball using ground fish from different fish and boil it along with the bones to cook it. The liquid is poured over the fish balls, put into the fridge, it becomes jelly, you eat it with the hotest horseraddish money can buy to hide the taste
