MGM Grand is a very nice property and connects easily to New York New York and Excalibur, from there you can take the tram to Luxor and the Monte Carlo, all nice properties. Plus it keeps you off street level a bit to keep you away from some of the riff-raff.

There is a Tix4Tonight just down the street from the MGM near the M&M's store.

The lions in the casino are very cool and worth watching for a bit of free entertainment.

Hopefully you arrive off peak time, because check-in can take a while when all the planes are landing.

I live in Vegas. Venetian is easily the best joint on the strip. Absolutely gorgeous throughout. Get a players card, you'll get free slot play and comped a buck an hour at the poker tables. V is my go to spot on the strip. For sports I hit Caesars or Mirage. Enjoy your stay.
