If your shots are within 100 or so yards, a rifled 12 ga with sabot slugs will do you well. 60-75 yards or less, a smooth more with iron sights and regular "rifled" slugs will work. 50 and under is good for a bead and smooth bore (unless you're really familiar with it). And 35ish and less 00 buck will do the job (if legal in your area).
I live in alabama. My shotgun is the long barrel for skeet shooting.

I am entirely unfamiliar with Alabama, so you may want to talk to some local hunters and get their input. A great place for this would be at your hunters education class (assuming you haven't taken it yet). Cheapest way to go would be to throw a new barrel on your 870. Up here in WNY, that would do just about everything you need.

Other than that, the only limit is your pocketbook and your skills.

I know nothing about MAGS. I would just check with your local gun shop. You might even be able to use buck shot in AL. Not sure so make sure you know what is legal.

Have fun.

NJ is shotgun only. I have a 12 ga Remington 870, full choke barrel. I use 00 Buckshot, 2 3/4" shells. I've been meaning to get a slug barrel with a scope, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I have a nice stand to hunt with a scope too...overlooking a field. One of these years.

Opening day is next Monday. I've been seeing an 8-pointer while bow hunting but haven't been able to get him close enough. Last Friday he was 50 yards away or so. If he comes that close next Monday, sayonara.

Well technically you are "hunting" with it!

I'm disappointed... nobody is posting pictures. So I'll get it started. Here's my.. *ahem*... hunting rifle. (My prey of choice is paper... with an occasional milk jug thrown in... some filled with water... some with jello)

Proud owner of a Ross Mk III here.

A perfect battle rifle...as long as the battle's at Camp Perry or someplace indoors!

Here's my 'special' rifle. Cogswell Harrison 475 Nitro Express (3 1/4"). Built in 1918.

Haven't hunted with it. Yet...

Why is your aim point mounted on top of your removable carry handle? And who made your Rifle?

It just seemed like the right thing to do? I don't know really. I guess I didn't want to spend the money on another rear iron sight to cowitness through the aimpoint. The little rail on the carry handle is actually hollow so the iron sights are still functional.

And I made my rifle. It's an Olympic Arms lower receiver, DPMS trigger group, Rock River barrel and upper, and a Colt bolt and carrier.
