Sweet! My boy gets his first .22 on the 31st for his birthday.

The difference is penetration v. Velocity.

The lower the grain, the greater the velocity but less penetration.
The higher the grain, the more penetration but less velocity.
124 was created to find a happy medium and get a bit of both worlds, rather than more of one and not enough of the other.

As such, I try to buy the more popular 124.

Any suggestions? I have a Ruger LC9.
For the range I say buy what's cheapest. For carry I recommend heavy for caliber which for 9mm is 147gr or 147gr+p

For range, agree.
for protection, I would say depends on where you live.
In Florida, penetration not an issue as seldom folks wearing layers.
In the colder areas, would consider penetration a must in the winter.
While I prefer 124 and that is the most I have, I own quite a few rounds of 115 and 147 also.

Is there a big recoil difference in the 115, 124, 147?

It really comes down to personal preference for the most part. A lighter round will give higher velocity and slightly lower static energy (knock down power) and vice versa for a heavier round. When I had my 9mm I used 124's for target and for defense but only because at the time the Speer Gold Dot did not come in 147gr for reloading. My thought process on this really was I didnt need the high velocities of lighter bullets, because if I ever got into a self defense situation they would most likely be less than 10 ft from and I wanted to knock them down with the first shot. The heavier and faster opening JHP like gold dot, golden sabre, and black talons will deliver this in the most effective manner. Hydra Shok's arent bad either.

There is a slight recoil difference but if you are accustomed to your weapon it will be minimal and should not affect target acquisition very much. The heavier round will have slightly higher recoil.

I doubt I would notice the recoil.

I guess I may buy a 50 round pack of the 3 then, 115, 124 and 147 and try them this weekend.

Awesome Kevin! I know he's loving it

My dad mentioned a few months ago that he would love to have one as well. Shortly thereafter I stumbled on one for a great price. He looked like a 10 year old boy Christmas morning when he opened it up...beat the heck out of giving him gift cards to Lowes

Awesome choice but will take patience and diligence to get. The hunt may even wear you down and cause you to give up.
Start here.
http://www.shoot-straight.com/
Call them daily if you have to.
They don't have them today and suddenly, one passes by the store and there they are waiting to be bought, then as fast as they came, they are gone.
This place is a large reputable outfit.

+1 for using this retailer. I bought my Kimber from there last week, they gave me a discount on the price even before I had the chance to ask for their bottom dollar number.

wow... just stumbled across a vendor with 90 round AR15 drum mags in stock. Selling at the relatively fair price of $130 too... Something tells me that won't last long

Always wanted to get a drum mag myself... but, at that price, I can get 10x30 round mags... still haven't been able to justify it.

Just got some awesome news that made my day.
My Armalite AR10 I bought 11 days ago just shipped.
As my kids would say, "are we there yet?".

Francis I've never trusted the drums to work right, generally speaking. Admittedly that's based on ones I saw some years back, in practice and competition. (No one flame me please, if you have drums that run right in your gun, more power to ya.)

Perhaps the ones of today have had the bugs worked out, I dunno. Good way to find out would be ask folks who shoot Three Gun matches.

I finally finished up my 1943 Mosin Nagant. It was a project I have been wanting to do for a while. I got all the cosmoline out and off of it. Then sanded the finish off the stock (left the engraved markings), stained and put 7 coats of Tru oil on it.
Took it to the range and put about 25 rounds through it. Its a fun and pretty accurate gun to shoot. Yet it kicks like a 2ton mule when bench resting it.
