I'm drinking another Deschutes Black Butte porter. I've probably had a case of these since they hit MN last month.

Brown's Whiskey Barrel Aged Porter out of a fresh growler.

Outstanding. Just took a Gold at the New York Tap Fest, and the brewpub is on my way home,

Bourbon, vanilla, oak......mmmmmm.

All out of a rather small porter at only 6% abv.

This is the perfect alternative for when I want that bourbon/vanilla taste but don't want to get blastet by a BCS or KBS.

I would call this thin, except it has a ton of flavor. So, I'll say the body is light and drinkable, and the flavor is

It is, but there's something off putting about the thinness of it. It doesn't drink like a porter, more like a brown ale.

I'm not much on sticking within style guidelines, but the thinness bothers me for some reason, even though it's really flavorful.

I think what it is it seems CHEAP to me. It's a fairly low ABV (just under 6%), and the body is thin. Pulling on my homebrew background this says, low O.G., which says not much malt in the mix.

Or I don't know, maybe I've just gotten so used to BCS, KBS, Nightstalker etc that everything in comparison seems thin, LOL

I got a favorite that fits that bill too.

John Henry 3 Lick Spiker Ale. It's an ale but with a bourbon/smokey flavor. It's not thick like a stout or porter. I don't think it's cheap cause it's $11.99 a six pack () which is still cheaper than KBS. It's from Cold Springs MN and could be a daily favorite.

I can get that if I want to drive about an hour away here:

They also have the Sn 30th on tap, which might be interesting.

Lower mash temp and/or use of sugar in the beer will thin out the body as well. Usually a lower mash temp makes for a more 'drinkable' beer that has a lower final gravity, drier and less malty sweet. Of course there is such a thing as too dry/thin.

I didnt know that about the lower mash temp, that could explain it as the beer isnt particularly sweet.

Wouldnt using sugar have a tendency to increase the abv while keeping the body light though? The abv on this is below 6%

Yes it would, at 6% ABV it's unlikely they used sugar though, my guess is its just a lower mash temp. You really only use sugar in higher ABV beers that you want to finish drier. Like most Beligians, high ABV and a lighter body (versus, say a barleywine of similar ABV) is achieved by mashing low (very fermentable wort, to yield a dried beer) and using sugar (also to 'dry out' the beer, as sugar is nearly 100% fermentable it will add alcohol without adding much body/sweetness/maltiness in the finished beer, like adding more grain instead to boost the abv would).

I'm not saying there's no way they used sugar, just that its not likely for the abv and the style. Anything is possible though.....
