Speaking of trash cans, garbage men refused to empty mine this morning due to the "ammonia" smell that was coming out of it. They were afraid it was toxic so I had to tip them to take my CC's from away.

Ever open up your cigar humidor and get a whiff of what smells like ammonia? According to one of my best sources, this is a result of the tobacco having not been fully-fermented before the cigar was rolled. Unfortunately, home aging will have little to no effect on reducing the odor. Once the tobaccos have been rolled into the cigar they pretty much retain whatever ammonia is left in them. That said, it doesn't necessarily mean the cigar will taste bad, but a cigar made with properly fermented tobaccos should not give off an ammonia-like aroma.

Truth be told, I thought it sounded a little "off" at first, myself, but I have a lot of respect for this gentleman. Hey, no offense taken. I just heard back from my source at Oliva Cigars, and with nothing more to add, he's sticking to his original statement. At least you're polite enough to say "don't be offended," unlike some of the other forums where it's like pledging a fraternity.

As far as I know, fermenting, and aging are 2 different things in the production process right? Fermentation takes place at much higher temperatures that aging. Correct me if I'm wrong...
