I stopped in the local shop today to buy some wine for my wife, and they had these Paulaner glasses with a 1 liter can of wiesn beer, so I got one of those too. The 16oz can of Surly is alongside just for size comparison.

Pliny is as good as always, only a week and a day old all the way out here in Colorado, I am impressed. An 'often imitated, never duplicated' sort of thing...I would not call myself a hop fan, but I do enjoy the balance and clean, I suppose, taste and mouth feel of the classic Pliny, the mildly sweet finish brings it all together. Lots of good beers downed tonight along with it, on the eve of our date with GABF.

Being an East Coaster, I wouldn't call Pliny balanced. But fantastic, it is!

I've held off on brewing a clone of Pliny the Elder because, well--the hops alone would cost about $40+ for a 5 gallon batch (almost 17 oz of hops, that's insane!) I think the whole thing would run about $100. But maybe it's worth it.

FWIW, while I've never had PtE and can't make the comparison, if you're interested in a solid IPA clone, Midwest Supply's Ferocious is an excellent Surly Furious clone. The clone receipe and kit was made in conjunction with Todd Haug, who is now the head brewer at Surly and was once an employee at Midwest. Use the British II yeast, it's the same that Surly uses.

They sell Pliny packs for under $15, I think it's 12-13 ounces of hops for five gallons. I just bought 4.5 pounds of hops that averaged ~$0.85 cents an ounce (online).

This was the place:

Nice, I've yet to try pliny. I've had Dreadnaught and loved it, I hear good things about the elder and the younger.

3 Ommegang Hennepin
3 Ommegang Abbey
3 Unibroue La Fin Du Monde
3 Trios Pistoles
sixer of Left Hand Oktoberfest

4 pack of Dogfish Punkin

2 Abita S.O.S.-Save our Shores... .75 from each bottle sold goes to clean-up efforts in the gulf.
