I always take the lighter apart (3 pieces — 2 case and 1 lighter) and store the lighter separately from the case.

The Cigar Traveler lighter also uses dollar store lighter inserts. However the refills that come with the lighter are refillable, so you get the best of both worlds.

I’m guessing that the refillable inserts would also work in the Soto.

Can’t remember if I had taken it a part or not. I will be taking it apart for future travels. I do know that my current one did survive a battle with the washer
