Mary liked this a lot and when returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie.

All well and good --- but that still doesn't answer the bigger mystery: why is the bottom button hole on my shirts sideways?

If the slot was up and down it would be easier for the shirt to come un-buttoned on it's own. The button holds stronger with the slot going sideways. You will also notice the top button is the same way.
