Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I am looking for something like this.
However, the reviews I have read for this and similar units complain about the wood being too thin and warping under load. One solution would be to buy another piece the same size at HD, but I'd rather not mess with it. So....do any of you have any recommendations? TIA! |

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I bought 4 shelves just like that from Sears 7 years ago when I moved into my house. My shelves are made from 1/2 fiber board and have not broken, splintered or warped yet! And I live in South Florida where humidity always runs high.

Good to know. This is my project for Thanksgiving weekend. I am looking to get 2 or 3 of these plus some overhead storage, new tool box and a bunch of other stuff.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
The reviews are correct, I had one of those shelf units once and the MDF warping under load is exactly what it did.
I've been using NSF chrome wire shelving for years now. It's about $80 to $100 for a 4 or 6 shelf 2-foot by 5-foot unit depending where you buy it. The shelves are rated for 600lbs or 800lbs depending on the unit and they don't bend or warp. IIRC, you can get it at costco and sam's club or any food service supplier. This stuff: |

Same, we have about 6-7 of these and some are inside the garage some are in the basement. They are very good shelves from my experiences. None have broken or been damaged yet. Had them for 5-8 years.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I've had a number of the MDF shelving units for 8-10 years in the garage and the basement. I've had no issues with warpage or breakage. They are not workbench quality, but if used as a shelving unit, loaded evenly and within load recommendations, I don't think you'll have any issues.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
Sounds like I am looking in the right direction then. Worst case, I will double the MDF for shelves that will have heavier stuff. I really do not see more than 50-60 LB per shelf though.

Do you have an Ikea near you?
I built up 4 different sections of the Gorm system from Ikea. http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/30058508/ You can custom build it to your needs and they have a bunch of accessories that build in to make them suited to many needs. I built the system that is in my cold cellar with wine bottle rack shelves etc., the laundry room system is custom to the wife.... and my work shop has what I wanted.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
Probably be fine then. When I said I had them loaded, I probably had anywhere from 200lbs to 500lbs per shelf in some cases, also, different brands, different quality. I don't remember what brand or where the ones I had came from other than it wasn't Sears.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I have 10 Grainger storage shelf units, some for my garage and the rest in my work shop. I have been using them for over 10 years through two moves. They last a long time!
They run from the type you show, to 700 lb per shelf capacity. They are interlocking, can be adjusted to any height and are reasonably priced. You can check them out here: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/com...ecatalog/N-bwb Good Luck! |

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I built my own out of 2x4s and plywood but at work we have a lot of the type in the O.P.
We double up the particle board, which is weaker than MDF, if it needs to hold more weight. |

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
They have plastic ones at Lowe's that are sturdy, last, look good, and are well worth the money (around $65-$75, iirc). They break down and store easily, too.

Re: Any of you folks bought garage shelving lately?
I have had great luck w/ my Gorilla Racks. I have 3 in my garage and 7 in my warehouse at work. I have had them for almost 10 years. Many of the shelves have 200-300 lbs of stuff on them and I have not had one bow, splinter or even flex.
