Default kitchen project

So I have mentioned I am redoing the kitchen in our house. I got prices from local contractors and then decided to do most of the work myself.

All of the before pictures were taken after I started

sink, windows, counter-top, and cabinets. Note the linoleum floor

old door ripped out, new steel energy star door in, different view of cabinets/ sink countertop

Wall beside stove, no doors on cabinets

Opposite wall, this counter-top cabinet was built to hold dishwasher and water heater.

Nice work! The cookbook holder/wine rack is a great idea. Hmmm ... wonder if I can find a nook in the kitchen to add one

This is one of the recent ones I did. Customer hated the cabinets above the island, and wanted to open it up. They also hated the lack of utility on the range/frig wall:

before

after

before. note the frig was on this wall:

after.

Oh my god will you please come live with me for a month. I've got a kitchen that is in a perpetual state of terribleness. It needs a complete rehab and I don't have the time to do it or even know where to start.

the toughest thing about doing this sort of stuff youself is getting the balls up to completely tear it up. the old saying about not being able to make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. If you have an idea what you want to do and a budget you think will make it (take what you think it will cost and add 25%) get a book or two and go for it. This is the third room in the house I have done, did both bathrooms first and learned a lot doing them. This is our first house and we have basically just tried to do as much as we can with it to make it comfortable and what we want and also learn everything we can so when we do upgrade we have a much better idea what we want/ how we want things to be

Yeah, I just have this feeling in the pit of my stomach that if I start getting into doing more than just replacing cabinets, I am going to have a major project on my hands. The house was built in 1916 and the kitchen hasn't been updated since the 60s except for the previous owners drug induced painting skills. The house has knob and tube wiring and there is no rational reason for why certain outlets and switches are on the breakers they are on. You inspired me this afternoon to consider some options I had never thought of like moving the sink and relocating appliances to maximize space in addition to tearing down the plaster and lath, that I know I need to do, but in the end I don't think I want to sink so much $ into a house that I'll never get it back out of.
