I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
I didnt know I had all these sticks. The hygrometer was working inside but said 57%. Thats pretty dry.
I wet the humidification disk and added a humid stick and wiped the insidee of the wood down with a damp towel lightly. Do you think the cigars can come back? Arturo Fuentes, Rocky Patel torpedos, and some Padrons! I hope they can be brought back alive! Last edited by The.Sheepdog; 12-04-2014 at 02:27 PM. |

One shock treatment I have heard of is to take them in the bathroom with you when you take a hot shower. The high humidity can, supposedly, help dry sticks recover more quickly.
I've even tried it a few times, but cannot attest to the success.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
Assuming your hygometer is accurate, 57% is not all that dry.
They don't need to be "brought back alive". Just stored at your preferred RH.

70% is most usual but a tad moister is what I really prefer. Very humid here in Fl in the summer and very dry in the winter. Yesterday was close to 60% here. Thats dry for here.

I think they can recover nicely store them at your preferred RH but I wouldnt go above 70% for a month or two and they should be fine maybe even great.

I believe that your cigars will be just fine.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
Be careful with 70% or higher humidity. Mold, and more importantly, BEETLES, like to live in that humidity range. If you are storing them that high, make sure your temp stays below 70ºF.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
Could cigar bugs live over a year in dry cigars? No way to keep the boxes at 70*. The best I can do here is maybe 78*. Its 81 outside today. Or was. 77* now at 5pm. Thats cool for us!

Wine fridge is your friend for keeping temps down. If budget allows, that is.
The beetle eggs can remain dormant for a long time. They can hatch under the right conditions. The only way I know to eradicate them is to freeze.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
well the hygrometer is already up to 63% so I might think of another way to BBQ the bugs. Fire! I realize just because the box is 63% doesnt mean the cigars are already.
Tomorrow I shall try one of the Padrons. I just cant help it! I do have another fridge but I think it is cooler than 70 anyway. Probably still would not hurt even if a bit cooler. I think it is time to toss out the leftover dark meat turkey! Then there should be room. |

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
I'm with Jamie. Nothing wrong with 57% at all.
Watch that "over 70%" thing. Get close to 80% and you'll have mold out the wazoo.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
The last time I had smokes in a humidified tupperware or humidor I had them both at 73% and they were great. If you think the 63 % the box is at now is fine then great. I am going to try one tomorrow and then watch the box for a week. I am considering putting the humidor in the spare fridge (cokes, zero coke, Boost, beer, like that.) It is probably at 45* if not cooler. I guess the hygrometer/temp gauge will tell me.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
A refrigerator without humidification control will dry out your smokes. I wouldn't store them there.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
Never heard of a fridge with humidification. I would be putting the humidor in the fridge which is humidity controlled. or trying to be. It reads 63% and 75.2 right now.

Re: I just found another humidor with sticks in it.
I think what they are trying to say is a compressor driven fridge has a tendancy to pull moisture from the air inside causing very low humidity.
A lot of us use Vino Temp wine coolers for a humidor. It uses a thermo electric system for cooling which doesn't pull moisture from the air. We use various ways to humidify it. |
