And then there was one....
Here's an article on the last American veteran of the "Great War", better known as World War I. Remarkably he's also a Bataan survivor.
http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pb...332/-1/NEWSMAP While it's not mentioned in this article, he was also a longtime cigar smoker. I recall it being cited elsewhere, long ago.

Sobering thought aye?
Of 4 million vets he's the last one. The closing lines of Bladerunner come to mind "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe...." And today....well..I'll leave it at that. *shoves soapbox back in the closet* |

Re: And then there was one....
Wow!
In third grade, I was required to go to a nursing home and interviews someone there about history. I interviewed two guys. First, there was the gentleman who was born in 1862 (he was 108 at the time of my interview), who's father came back with only one leg after Gettysburg. Second, there was a gentleman who had boxed against Max Schmeling. I visited frequently with both of them for the next few months, just sitting, talking, playing sheepshead, and marveling in the history they shared. Thanks for jogging the memories.
