I did? Actually I didn't, but it sure is a good thing you're around to tell me why I do things

How about you use the WHOLE quote. What he said on the radio - and they have replayed it ad naseum down here - was, "what you would like me to say is if you hit him, you hope he doesn't get up and play again".

Of course the national media isn't reporting what he actually said, they are just reporting the sound bite that makes it sound like he is advocating injuring a player.

I actually prefer watching Aussie rules football or rugby. Don't really understand all the rules but it's as hard or harder hitting and none of the padding the US boys wear. No one leaves those games without some blood showing. They bandage up and get right back in.
I was introduced to rugby when one of my sons played with an intramural club when he was in college. Rugby is a MAN'S game and you better go on the field with the acceptance that you are going to get the sh$t beat out of you a time or two. But what was even more interesting was watching the women's rugby match. DUDE! NOW THAT'S A SPORT WORTH WATCHING. and it's every bit as violent as the men's. It was even good when the women's team that won took off their tops and ran around the field.

It's always been football's dirty little secret that defensive players are trying to knock players (especially quarterbacks) out of the game. I played middle linebacker on several different levels and I prided myself on the fact that if a reciever came across the middle to catch a ball, he wouldn't want to stretch out quite as far on the next catch after I laid my shoulder pads into his short ribs under his arm. Was I being a dirty player? I don't think so.

I never wanted to end someone's career or injure them. But I DEFINITELY wanted them looking around to see where #51 was.

That's not true. It's never been a "dirty little secret". I was taught that in high school. Our defensive coach always said,

"It's hit or be hit when you're on the field and it is always better to do the hitting."
