Good history, too. Ken burns stuff and anything well written and unslanted. I'm currently reading Surface Detail, it's Culture Series Book 9 by Iain Banks. I skipped book 8, I'll read it next. Then 10 is the last one and I'm going to be sad. What a fantastic series across the board. Peter, I'm gonna grab a Paperwhite. I'm hoping they go on sale on Prime Day, if not I'll just order it after. I'm pretty excited about it. Weeze is, too. I just found out we can share our amazon book accounts, so we can both sync our books without signing in and out and making problems.

Re: What are you reading?
I got done with Surface Detail, then finished Matter, and now I'm about 60% of the way through Hydrogen Sonata.
That'll be the end of the Culture Series by Iain Banks. I'll be a sad panda. On Prime Day I bought Kindle Unlimited, so I'll be rooting through all that stuff to find nuggets for the next year. I hope it was worthwhile, it looks like it is.

Re: What are you reading?
I bet I'd like Pirate Hunters, Steve.
I finished Hydrogen Sonata, read a few shorts by Hugh Howey, Beacon 23, I believe. Now I'm reading Death World by BV Larson. It's another sci-fi series that I've enjoyed. It's not the greatest, but it's an easy read. Larson's vocabulary is about a 2 compared to Banks, if that. He does write a nice picture, but the series is getting a bit soap-opery with this book. I hope it straightens out shortly.

Re: What are you reading?
I don't get much time these days to read, so I have really been tearing up the audio books. I think this was one of the best books I've read/listened to in quite a while.

Re: What are you reading?
Just finished "Catching Fire: How Cooking made us Human" by Richard Wrangham.
The book presents the theory that it was cooking, more than speech or tool making, that accounts for the transition from homo habilus and erectus to human. As a corollary it makes hash of the current paleo or raw diet claims and cites evidence that our bodies have in fact evolved in specific ways to reap the benefits of a cooked diet. Generously footnoted if you"re academically minded and a pleasurable read even if you're not. A great book for anyone interested in evolution or anthropolgy.

I read Battle Cruiser and I'm working on Rebellion, both by BV Larson.
I have a mess of books to catch up on this series, so I'll be busy awhile.

Re: What are you reading?
"Raised Eyebrows: My Years Inside Groucho's House" written by Steve Stoliar.
He was a student at UCLA and he finagled himself a job as Groucho Marx's secretary. This was near the end of Groucho's life, so most of the anecdotes are bittersweet. Here is one of my favorites: A newspaper reporter interviewed Groucho on Groucho's 85th birthday. He asked Groucho, "How does 85 feel?" Groucho replied, "69 felt better!" |
