Re: First Firearm Thread.
These first two are my everyday run of the mill pair, a couple of .40 SWs. And then there are those times that you have to question your decision making abilities, the third is a .460 SW 15" Encore. Great for clearing the firing line!!!

Re: First Firearm Thread.
Judging by the title I thought that was a thread for folks to get suggestions on their first firearm...is this the best place to ask about that?

Re: First Firearm Thread.
Yes. I've always listened to GI Joe and he hasn't let me down yet.
I may be in the market for a hand gun. Inexpensive, easy to shoot for a beginner. For fun at the range and home defense (god forbid). My friend who is "into it" suggested a Glock 19 but I wasn't really expecting to have to spend upwards of $600 to get started (plus a safe and all the accessories). I'm not looking to carry. Would going with something cheaper to start be shooting myself in the foot? (har-har-har) I should add the last time I shot a firearm was about 20 years ago and was my grandfathers .410.

Re: First Firearm Thread.
You can get a Sig 9mm in several different iterations for well under 6, as I recall. 9 is cheap to shoot. Plus a hundred others. I will touch base when I get back from a couple powerful beers.

Re: First Firearm Thread.
There's nothing like a Browning Buckmark for a fun pistol. It's a .22 so not all that defensive, but it's a great start.
edit: I was going to post a picture or link but I suggest you do a search, as this gun comes in a huge variety of configs. |

I've been poking around and there are a couple Smith & Wessons in the $250 range as well as some by Tarus and Kel-Tec. Are they no-go's?

Re: First Firearm Thread.
Andrew, if you have no intention of carrying and want a good home defense weapon get a 12-guage pump action shotgun. If you get a regular (not pistol grip/short barrel) you can use it for home defense, busting clays, hunting birds or even deer. They are very versatile, cost $250-300 and will last a lifetime. Remington and Mossberg are both very popular and well made shotguns.
Shotguns, with pellets (not slugs) will not over penetrate passing into a neighbors home should the $**t hit the fan. You also don't have to really aim them for home defense, rather tuck it under your elbow, point, and shoot. Very effective. Plus I've heard a deaf burgler can hear a pump action shotgun being loaded from a mile away and usually run in the opposite direction.

Mike thanks for taking the time...I was thinking of something that I could use for target shooting at the range as well so I'm not sure a shotgun would work for that but it's a good thought.

Re: First Firearm Thread.
For home defense I 100% agree with Mike, a rem 870 pump is the perfect home defense weapon.
I recommend this: Rossi 972, 6in Barrel, 357 Mag Look familiar? Ammo is around $20 a box, dead simple to use, great for target practice, and definitely has that sh!t your pants factor for criminals. |

Re: First Firearm Thread.
The idea of the .22 is great. You can buy 500 rounds for about 20 bucks and shoot all day. The Buckmark eats just about any type of ammo you put in it. I love my .22's.
That said, pretty hard to beat the solid thump of a 1911 but paying for the pistol and the ammo is another story entirely. I have a Sig 226 and it's a fine pistol but if I were to buy another 9mm I'd go with the Beretta 92FS just as a matter of personal preference. Feels better in my hand and I am more accurate w/ those things for some reason. |
