I have a pristine 95 Camaro bought new by me with 43k miles on it, and thought I might take advantage of the cash for clunkers program. According to the cars.gov website, my car averages 20mpg so it does not qualify. Also, it would be shame to scrap this car as required by law. Still, that 4500.00 would have been a sweet deal on a new car. Anyone taking advantage of the program??

I would love to with my 94 4Runner but I haven't owned it a year so I don't qualify. Way to go green/economic legislation. Seriously a year? What is the point in that.

Probably so people are less likely to go out and keep buying and turning over qualifying cars with the money.

My comment about GM was not related to the Cash for Clunckers, it was directed at their bankruptcy and now being Government owned and run. I will not support this Gov.

A 95 with only 43K on it? Wow! I would put that on in less than three years.
Can you get cash for a dead Toyota and buy a Ford? |

I was thinking about it. I have a 93 Explorer that gets me around 10 MPG. I really want to get a truck but the only ones available are the small ones like the Ranger, Colorado/Canyon, the Mazada version of the ranger and the tacoma and most are only 2 wheel drive. What is nice is they offer the Colorado in a 4 wheel drive with a 5 or 6 speed manual which would be cool. Does anyone have experience with the 4 cylinder Colorado/Canyon? The thing is I really want to get a new Silverado and for a 20 year old kid I dont really want to be making payments.
I might just end up getting a used truck and selling the explorer

My dad is thinking about trading in his old (mid 90s I think) Explorer. I'm not sure how much he'll get, but said he's going to try it.

I was most pissed about the stupid age limitations of the bill... the car or truck being traded in has to be 25 years or newer? What the crap is that? My parents have an old POS F250 they inherited from my grandparents that they would love to trade in and get rid of, but its a 1982 so they don't qualify...
I have to say I'm getting seriously tired of these damn hoops you have to jump through for this bill... A serious waste of a Billion dollars... ![]() |

What happens to the old cars? They have to be registered and drivable. Do they crush them or maybe ship them out of country?
My 11 year old 295 HP V-8 car gets 18.5 MPG city, 25 MPG at 75 MPH on the open road. It would not qualify. Same mileage the 125 HP Toyota got before the engine died. I'm S.O.L. Besides, you can save far more money buying a two year old low mileage car. |

All cars turned into a dealership for the program must be registered with the program and proof of crushing turned in or a fine will be levied on the dealer.

They want to make sure you don't go to a salvage yard and buy a $500 "driver" to scam the system. I like the 25 year old rule to protect classics, speaking of...this Camaro with a V8 is worth more as a low mileage enthusiast car. Even a well preserved low mileage V6 car could be worth more than the $4500. Any way I wasn't planning on replacing the wife's car for two more years but if I can get the numbers straight I'll buy her a PT Cruiser today for $8500. My '95 Cougar qualifies.

This almost makes blood shoot out my eyes! Why the hell are they scraping these vehicles? Aren't there people out there that are loosing their vehicles because they have lost they're job and can't afford the payments? How are they supposed to get to work when they get a job? What about the lower income families that don't need a new car but need a reliable vehicle? I'm 26 and up until a year a go I didn't drive a care that I paid more than $3000 for, and none of those were "clunkers". That means that if the people that I bought those cars from could have traded it in for 4500 even though they were only worth between $2,000 and $3000 I would have had to either pay more for a car or not gone to work, and school.
Instead the program should have been to donate your car to one of the charities that auction them off, the Gov't could give a tax refund up to a certain amount that could be used either for a new car, or a good used car, or spent however someone wanted to like making a couple extra payments on a house or pay down a credit card bill, you know smart thing like that. |
