Air handling in my smoking room.
Hey all, been off the forum for a while. Could use some advice.
After years of dreaming about it, I'm finally building a shop / smoking lounge. I detest the term Man Cave. This is a place I can store and tinker on my motorcycles and have the gang over for cigars. I will post some pics but wanted some help / advice on air handling. It's 936 sq feet and with 6 inch stud construction and drywall it's got 880 sq ft of useable space. 10 foot walls with parallel chord trusses making for a 15 foot ceiling height at peak. Being in Winnipeg, in-floor heating was a must for winter months. I ran 1,000 feet of Rehau tubing in the 6" pad (1 foot thickened edge) I utilized Halo insulation under the concrete and below the tubing. 4 zone Rehau manifold with a 10KW boiler. Also employing an HRV to turn the air about 5-6 times an hour. In the coldest months I will need to cope with heat loss so my electrician is considering a solution possibly using a duct heater. Also considering a way to use the boiler for secondary heat. It might be a nightmare to "plumb" so in-duct heater might be how we're going. I have 100 amp service but don't want to go to the poorhouse paying the hydro bill. The last piece of the puzzle is some secondary air handling equipment to deal with the smoke. The HRV should remove most but I've been thinking about adding 4 Purifan units on the ceiling. I saw them in JD's office at Drew Estates in Miami and they seemed to really work. Other forums have been saying they are not good for cigar smoke. Others are suggesting an ionizing unit. The HRV goes in next week along with the boiler and manifold. Anyone have any suggestions? I guy I know has a kick ass HRV but he paid $40k and it costs a bundle to run. I'm looking for a champagne solution on a beer budget. I also worry about cigars burning poorly and unsure if I will be creating pressure imbalances using the HRV and the fans? Any closet mechanical / electrical engineers who smoke out there? Wayne

Here's the tubing and the HALO insulation
4 zones (each with a return line) First of the cement going in Messy work. The crew was very careful to not damage the heating hoses. Wall # 1 UP And #2 And the final wall Parallel chord truss construction 15 feet to the peak View from the inside Two 7 foot triple pane windows on each side Trenching the power lines My contractor. Besides by buddies who helped with the wall raising, this guy is doing the construction all himself. Have an electrician and a plumber and an HRV guy. More pics soon.

Not sure. If you go to imgur.com you can hold them there and then here click the picture button and just use the link imgur gives you or you can click "go advanced" here, and then under manage attachments upload the pictures you want to put here, there are size limits (actual mb of the images) doing it that way.

NOW I REMEMBER... You only have a short length of time to edit, then the option disappears.

Thanks for the pics, at last. Looks awesome. But they illustrate your first error when it comes to ventilation . . . namely, you put up walls and a roof.

Very cool!
I know Massphatness and jonumberone have installed smoking rooms recently, maybe they could provide some insight?

Believe it pr not, JR Cigars has some recommendations.
https://www.jrcigars.com/blending-ro...on/2015/06/22/ 5 ACH puts you ahead of most rooms. But, it needs to be distributed. You may need ducts to dump the outside air over the smoking area. |

Re: Air handling in my smoking room.
This is what I had in my first cigar lounge: Penn exhaust fan and is 1050 CFMs (a bit over kill for a bedroom size room) I am looking at either the Broan L700 701 CFM High Capacity Ventilator, 4.7 Sones, 120V or L900 901 CFM High Capacity Ventilator, 4.1 Sones, 120V also the Soler & Palau FF900 918 CFM 3.8 Sones.
For me I have to have the exhaust fan in the ceiling in the center of the room. So the Sones are very important on the good side the smoke only has to travel about 5 feet till in goes out side. These units can be mounted in the ceiling or with a TDA kit can be mounted in the wall. This website will give you more then enough info: http://ryandeyer.com/cigar-room/
