Default Gonna get back into pipes...

I've been out of the pipe game for a while, so long in fact, that I can't locate any of my old pipe items This means I have to start new. I am eyeballing some stuff from a few vendors mentioned in the stickies here.. Gonna try and peice together my own starter kit, starting with a corn cob pipe, to get back into it, then progress to something nicer. Just thought I'd throw a little something up.. Can't wait to participate in this part of the forum a little more. The only thing I need is some advice on good starter tobaccos for a "newbie".

Thanks guys!
Scott

Hi Scott,

Welcome back! When you were smoking before, do you remember what kind of tobaccos you were smoking? Englishes, Virgnias, Aromatics, etc?

If you just want to pick up a few blends then I would highly suggest the following:

Escudo - this is a VaPer (Virginia and Perique mix) and it is delicious

Ruins of Isengard from Just For Him - A delicious blend of Burley, Cavendish, Black Cavendish, Virginia and a little bit of Latakia. I have had a lot of compliments on the room note when smoking this blend and it tastes just as good. Any of the Middle-Earth Pipeweed series from Just For Him would be a good blend to start with. This one and A Shortcut to Mushrooms are 2 of my favourites.

Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake - straight virginia and extremely tasty

Samuel Gawith's Best Brown Flake - Another straight virgnia that is just a wonderful smoke.

Frog Morton's Cellar - Like having a pipe full of smokey, delicious, whiskey. This has quickly become one of my go to blends. Just look at the reviews.

I hope this helps and hopefully you enjoy at least one of these!

All the best!
Alex

awesome list Alex.. I don't really recall what I was smoking before. so I'm open to just about anything. I am a full bodied full nicotine Cigar smoker, and I drink my coffee black if that makes a difference on recommendations...

That definitely can make a huge difference! Though most of the blends I previously listed would probably be to your liking.

You might want to lean towards more of the English and Latakia blends; Dunhill nightcap is a favourite of mine and many others. Any of the Frog Morton blends would probably be to your liking and they tend to pair well with coffee! Also, definitely give Dunhill Early Morning Pipe a try.

PM me your address if you'd like and I'll gladly send you some samples of the blends that I have in my regular rotation.

I, too, am easing back into things. My favorites are Maltese Falcon and Bombay Court for englishes and Anniversary Kake for virginias (vapers).

welcome back!

Must be in the air, I've been eyeballin' the 'ol pipe lately and thinking about picking it back up. I think a big part is the coming of fall.
I'm definitely looking at getting another pipe as I only have one now and don't want to overuse it. What site would you all recommend for a nice looking pipe for less than 50 bucks? The stickied list is a bit overwhelming.

Thanks Corey, I did see the selection from the first link yesterday and found a few contenders. Cupojoe's has some nice ones as well and seem like a reputable place.

Brotha.. I picked up a Cob for cheap at my local shop, and I gotta say, it's smoking great... I am looking into getting a nicer pipe, but for now a cob is doing the job!

I would definitely second that and say get yourself a cob. They are one of the cheapest, yet best smoking pipes you will find. I regularly smoke out of my cobs. They may not look as nice as briars and meers but they smoke just as good and sometimes better!

I went ahead with the cob Just have the one on the way now, as well as my briar. Grabbed some Sutliff Malto Dulce (the wife loves aromatics) and some MacClelland St James Woods. The STW is a big tin if anyone wants to swap a few bowls of something interesting just to taste whats out there. Fire me a PM if interested
