Default Looking for Youth Rifle

My son has been asking for a while to go hunting with me. anyone have experience with youth rifles? I've seen the cricket .22 LR with 16.26" barrel, also seen the Rossi combo but I hear it's not great. really looking for any feedback, there's not a whole lot of useful information out there, thanks in advance.

Ruger 10/22 would be a good option if you wanted a semi. I don't see why not to get a semi now. If Average Joe Jr. doesn't have the self control to fire only 1 shot then he'll be playing with legos instead fo gonig shooting with dad.

Love for Buds here also!

Maybe check out one of the marlin bolts. They are very nice, and you don't really have to worry about him running away like with a 10/22. Perhaps a single shot .22? check w. 4H or boy scouts in your area. They usually have a youth shooting program and may be able to help with a selection (single shot). Food for thought.

This, it is a rifle he will keep for the rest of his life. I still have the one my dad got me in 1977.

I've always been a fan of the bolt action, and if you are concerned about safety that is a pretty good way to go I think. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the above, especially if you instill a good base of safety and proper respect in him. You could always check out the used section of the local stores.

IMO the earlier you get to them the better chance you have of teaching them safe handling and the implications of improper techniques. It's the kids that aren't exposed to or don't have any respect for guns that you have to watch out for.

I have mine that I inherited that must be from the early 70's as well. Built like a tank and shoots the lights out.

What are you hunting?

I know little about youth rifles but I will say the Remington 870 youth model I've had since I was 9 or 10 has been a fantastic and versatile gun.

It really depends on the maturity of the shooter. I would choose a bolt action or a pump. I believe a semi makes it to easy to be a bad shot for young people
