Last night, some Armenian coffee...
This morning, a generous cup of some home roasted El Salvador Molina de Santa Rita coffee brewed in the Bodum press...

We have bags and bags of green beans we don't like. It's been awhile since I have had a spectacular bean.

Yemen Mokha Sana'nai, roasted 2 days ago to FC, drip, splash. Very nice, I think more rest will improve it. From SM.

Some well rested Ugandan Bugisu. Doesn't suck.
Earlier today, some CCM House Blend 2, I will play with the roast on that one, I think. Yesterday, some Columbian Supremo Popoyan that turned out pretty well on a sloppy roast. |

Nice selection, I love the variety that home roasting allows.

I've been drinking Costa Rican 1820 coffee for over a year now. The wife and I have been traveling there for a couple of years and LOVE this coffee. On our first trip I asked the locals what the best coffee was and they said 1820. Cafe Britt is supposedly the gourmet coffee of Costa Rica, all of the restaurants and hotels serve it but IMO 1820 is better and a lot cheaper. I have been having it shipped from CR for the last year 10-20 lbs. at a time.

The first batch I roasted came out very good w/ about 3 days rest. The second batch, I must not have been able to duplicate the same roast because it came out just pretty good. I am having a cup right now as I write. Those were some of the ugliest beans I have seen to date. I had to throw out about 10% of them before roasting because of bad quality. They also seemed to be picked at different ripenesses because the beans roast up very uneven. Some are hitting Vienna/French while others are barely hitting City +. The green beans (if you can call them that) are all different shades of yellow to green. I think it was just a poor quality batch, IMO. |

Cafe 1820 that I buy is ground or you can buy in whole bean. I am not a connoisseur of fine coffee..just someone that really enjoys a good cup of coffee. I was told that most of all the coffee produced in Costa Rica is actually exported as gourmet coffees and just a small portion is actually sold in CR. Cafe Britt is "considered" to be the best coffee sold in CR but is fairly expensive. The locals seem to drink 1820 because it is a lot cheaper but IMO, 1820 is actually better than Britt.

Sweet Marias. I like SM because of the reviews and rating system. It helps a ton. I think his ratings are very accurate. The problem is...I have been spoiled by some really great beans over the years and just haven't had anything lately that floats my boat.

After a few days rest (the beans, not me) yesterday I had some Kenya Kirinyaga AA Kabingara at Full City+. Man, what a great roast. Deep flavors with a bit of spice and coco. And just the right amount of citrus on the tongue.

Right now, having my India Monsooned Malabar AA Vienna Roast. Another very nice bean. Very different in look and taste. These beans start out almost white, they are so pale.
Very unique flavors also. Smokey, w/ a lite amount of baking spice and citrus. |
